BJ and Mariko are home, but they are jet-lagged and Mariko has a backlog of reviews etc to catch up on.
Movie night is back on next week with "Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion" [1972] the first of the Female Convict Scorpion movies and something called "Female Slave Ship" (or something) made by the same studio.
Start time 7pm-ish. All the usual applies...

What does the "W" stand for (he asks rhetorically)...
It took me a minute to realize this wasn't a joke.

Happy Trails
Today I had a third interview with Norco, and starting Monday I'll be employed there as a graphic artist! I'll be working on things like ads, catalogues, flyers, brochures...possibly even the designs that go on the bikes. Pretty damn pleased about that, so far.

Umm, wow...
I know we've beaten this horse to death and beyond, but this is a solid rundown of the worst distortions and factual errors of Fahrenheit 9/11, with links to many more examples.
It's a bit disturbing.

Zero-G pants-wetting, or, How I learned to stop worrying and ask someone to push me out of a plane...
Now that I'm getting settled in and have some free time, I'm obeying the prods of a fellow intern and thinking of going skydiving sometime soon. Only problem is, I'm a wuss, too fragile to do it alone. Anybody wanna jump out of a plane with me?
Vital info: The jump we'd be doing (being parachute virgins) is a 3000-foot tethered jump, which I'm told is the standard first drop. Step from the plane, freefall for perhaps a second before your chute automatically opens, and drift downwards. Costs about $200 (depending on the place), so I'll be saving my pennies for a little while before I'm up for it. The fields are mostly in Abbotsford, so fellow jumpers with car are especially welcome. A handful of my coworkers did it in May, said it was a fucking blast, and have been preaching skydiving to me ever since. Anybody interested?

Argh...

Sugestions Welcome
Because people can't go a tuesday with out a Den of Sin movie night, I have agreed to continue them in B.J. and Mariko's absence. However I'm fresh out of ideas as to what movies to program. This is your opportunity to contribute to the programming. So please feel free to tell me what to show on tuesday, i'll post my decision on monday night.

Best. Music Video. Ever.
I had some trouble getting the video and audio to synch up properly, but somehow I think it managed to make this better. As if that was possible.

***BIG CHANGES TO D.O.S. SCHEDULE***
rice king alert!!!
okay, tonight was supposed to be the night you've all been waiting for, but sadly we couldn't get a copy of Cool As Ice. However, since we do know where to find one we've decided to postpone the entire program until a later date and instead we bring you:
7pm -- Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter [1970] Those who managed to catch Female Convict Scorpion back in November will not want to miss this stylish Japanese Mod female JD movie starring Female Convict Scorpion herself Meiko Kaji.
9pm -- Female Convict Scorpion: Beast Stable [1973] The third entry in the Female Convict Scorpion series, it's not as good as the second film (which we watched back in November) but it's still got lots of style and gore to spare.
that's it for now. the beejster and i take off for NY/Montreal on Saturday and my sister has mentioned that she intends to continue movie night in our absence, but you'll have to talk to her about that. upon our return we will have another Female Convict Scorpion double bill and hopefully Cool as Ice/Purple Rain night. Detail upon our return.
rsvp, pop fund monies, blah, blah, blah...

edward fortyhands strikes back.
the sixty-four penny question becomes this:
in light of my (albeit more and more seemingly imaginary) friend piper not going to attend, is there any desire to play edward fortyhands? I realise this is short notice, but I could try to pick up some forties. graeme, I'll even look for rainier in forty form just for you, if you'd like.
otherwise, we could each try to initiate ourselves into the hundred ouncer club using plain beer. it's a simple task, just drink nine beers in a night. now the TWO HUNDRED OUNCER club is another matter, requiring just under seventeen beers.
personally, I think I can do it if I get an early enough start. who is man (or woman) enough to drive seveteen beers without puking with me? the bonus of this game over fortyhands is you can piss freely as often as you want. and the beer can be good.
and to think, people think I'm joking when I tell them I only drink to excess... all or very little, babee.

you're once, twice, three times a camper...
okay folks, let's try this one more time before I go on a murderous killspree and render all of your internal organs for kitten food...
camping. would like for at least six people to go, more would be better. thinking either the weekend of july 31 or or august 21. from my crappy recollection, I'm pretty sure most of us have had at least token availability for those weekends...
I have babysitting obligations the weekends of the july 3th and 17th (I'm looking at YOU, bj and mariko), helping my parents move weekend of july 10th, and my sister's baby shower weekend of august 14th.
owen has said no to july 10th, 24th and august 7th.
obviously, bj and mariko are unavailable july 3rd, 10th and 17th.
grae and bean have various school obligations that have yet to be defined.
paul is a bitch with a commitment problem. now that he has employment, I expect a ring on my finger. or at least a firm "maybe" for a weekend for camping...
toby and kate will probably use the pacific ocean as an excuse. losers.
I don't recall anyone else chiming in at all. bob and rach? eva? scott? karen? bree and nick?
offer still stands to heavily supplement the beer fund...

this is my little friend...
I made a very special purchase tonight. it's round, it's green, and it cost $3.99 plus tax.
the clubhouse kids now have a kickball for which to play kickball.
you all owe me a game of kickball for my birthday. it's a moral imperative that we play like schoolchildren. eating of paste optional.

B-Ballin, Shot-Callin, and Driving the Lane
Hey, I'm going out to buy a Basketball today (probably one of those fancy ones with the built-in pumps). Anyways, is anyone interested in playing some basketball tommorow, early afternoonish. Just shooting around, some 21, maybe a little 1 on 1 (but since I'm not very good this will be a fairly short.) Give me a call if you're interested.
While the Cat's Away...
Hey there, I know it's a little short notice, but I'm going to a show at the Brickyard Tonight. It's like 9-12 bux (I couln't make sense of the poster)
Here's what Canada.com says:
"Hella
Two-piece Sacramento guitar & drum band performs with Philadelphia's Need New Body, he Raking Bombs, and The Douggernaut
HELLA: two piece for Sacramento CA, ripping fast drums and guitar "Interlocking riffs and drum patterns have a dark metallic edge, but with blasts of melodic drive and bits of electronic hiss."
NEED NEW BODY: "Need New Body is widely known for their stunning theatrical live show, they've been know for wearing costumes, irregular instrumentation, and an overall crazy and thoroughly entertaining performance"
Hella are crazy good live, and one of the members of the Raking Bombs is a friend of mine.
Call me if you are interested in going, just so I know to keep an eye out.
And tommorow at the Pic Pub There's a hiphop show whose infor I can't find online, but has a bunch of people I've never heard of, Dj Moves, and AWOL One whose fricking awesome. Doors at 9, 10 bux at the door. Let me know if your interested...

Alive but warm
I am still alive and am really warm.
I don't really know what to bring back. They don't have monkeys in Arizona.
Won't check in again until I get home.

And it's Jim Davis. And that frightens me quite a lot.
But wow...it sure explains why Garfield has been around so long. It's supposed to be boring.

Last Minute Reminder...
hi all!
just wanted to let you know what's happening tonight at the D.o.S.
8pm (sharp!): Kwaidan [1964] Anthology film of Japanese ghost stories produced by Toho Studios. Required viewing for anyone who claims to be a fan of Japanese horror movies and important context for all of the "New School" Miike rip-offs we've been inundated by. High on atmostphere and style this is an evening not to be missed.
Note: Because the film is nearly 3 hours long there will only be one film tonight, but those who show up at 7pm like good little boys and girls may be treated to some horror shorts.
rsvp if you can, pop fund, call for directions blah, blah, blah...

All is well...
I have a new home! I was just informed that on June 26th, I'll be moving into a kickass place at Nelson and Broughton. 19th floor, nice view... damn, I'm looking forward to it.
My place in Victoria never felt much like home, mainly because my roommate Hugh, a very cool guy, has lived here two or three years. He's thus left his stylistic stamp all over the place and I haven't done much customizing, especially given that my island tenure was always limited to 6 months.
But now I live 5 minutes walk from Hon's Chinese!!! Anybody who wants to lend a hand in my brief move (only one volunteer needed, my bed's the only thing I can't move on my own) is invited out.
And yes, this means I'll be joining the Clubhouse Party that night. Run in bowel-clenching terror, Christian.

Hello all!
I've friends visiting from Ireland, and we're going to head out to the Purple Onion for Goth night this evening. I you'd care to join us, we'll probably be there around 11pm.
Hope to see a few of you there!

Republican Survivor
I know we're mostly Canucks here and all, but still I thought some of you might enjoy voting off your favourite Republican.
As an added bonus, there are "Crazy GOP" quotes along the left. The one I'm looking at now is a peach.
"God gave us the earth. We have dominion over the plants, the animals, the trees...God said, 'Earth is yours. Take it. Rape it. It's yours.'" -- Ann Coulter, Hannity & Colmes, 6/20/01
Love that rape imagery. You go, girl. You know, that's what political discourse needs more of. Rape imagery.

road trip itinerary
okay, this is what is going on this weekend. the planning is fairly modular, people can participate in what they want. I have one spare key and we'll have two vehicles, so as long as we don't split into more than two groups (or three if someone sits at home), we'll be fine.
friday, 6:45pm, cinerama: garden state
friday, midnight, egyptian: undead
saturday, 1:30pm, egyptian: love me if you dare
sunday, 11:30am, pacific place: garden state
donnie darko director's cut is playing all three days at the varsity, showtimes of 1:00, 4:00, 7:00 and 9:55. I figured one of the two later shows saturday would work best.
aside from the first garden state screening, no one has tickets reserved for anything except miyuki and I. if you want to go, you'll need to get tickets on your own. doubtful any of the shows will sell out, so tickets could be purchased at the box office. couldn't hurt to order them online and will call them at the theatre, tho. graeme and corrine's garden state tix are at will call, not sure what owen arranged for...
I'll spring for pizza one night. we'll need to figure out other food arrangements. if cost is an issue, we can acquire groceries, and, heaven forbid, actually good stuff cheaply.. there's also reasonably priced food all over. pho ($5 a person), taco del mar (BIGass burritos for $5), musashi's (cheap decent sushi, depends on the time of day tho), pagliacci ($2 a slice for pizza).
we can try to do other stuff too, if there's time and interest. that's a lot of fecking movies tho. some of the canadian contigent may want to break off and do their own thing for part of the time, which is fine. I'll try to draw up a rough map of seattle with some major thoroughfares to keep you from getting lost.

camping revisited.
okay folks... I'm proposing two dates for camping, and would like to get a handful of people to commit to one of them. if we can get maybe six people to give a firm commitment (ie, enough to warrant putting money down for a reservation), then if others can join on shorter notice, the more the merrier...
I propose either the weekend of july 24-25 or august 7-8. far enough in advance that people could insure they have time off and whatnot. it's the middle of summer, so school issues should be minimal.
as I offered before, I'll provide a keg for drunken debauchery. I just need some cohorts...

Yay!... and argh...
Woot! Probable job offer downtown!
Attendant ethical quandary. Dammit. Must find a way to get the job while making my potential employer understand that I refuse to do some of the political work he's attached to the position. Any suggestions on how to tell someone offering a spot that part of the job description is unacceptable?
As usual, I can't post about job stuff on my own blog, so you poor people have to listen to me whine...

Who wants to go with me Monday night, 7pm, Fifth Avenue? Me and another person. If I can't find anyone I won't go. But it's my birthday... :(

The June D.o.S. Schedule
Hey Kids.
Okay, I'm done being a bum. Here is the schedule for the full month. You'll notice I've included last week's schedule too, but that's purely for for my own records so you can ignore that if it makes you happier.
Tuesday June 1: Anime Night (robots not included)
7pm: Tokyo Godfathers [2003] -- Charming tale of three street people: a middle aged alcoholic, an equally middle aged drag queen and a 15 year old runaway find a baby in the trash on Christmas Eve and embark on an epic journey across the city to reunite the child with her mother.
9pm: Millennium Actress [2001] -- A thousand years of Japanese history, a century of Japanese film history and close to sixty years of personal history collide when a documentary film crew interview a famous actress upon the destruction of the studio she help build. Beautiful and complex this is filmmaking at its best.
Tuesday June 8: Asian Creepfest
7pm: Tell Me Something [1999] -- Think of it as the Korean "Se7en". A grim and twisty serial killer movie involving bags of body parts and lots of blood. Fun and thrilling it'll apparently have you on the edge of your seat.
9pm: Ju-On: The Grudge [2003] -- I know some of you have seen it already, but we haven't so tuff toenails. Creepy Japanese horror. If you've seen Ringu you'll know what to expect.
Tuesday June 15: Ghost Stories (one film because it's really long)
8pm: Kwaidan [1964] -- Trilogy of Japanese ghost stories. Creepy, atmospheric and beautifully shot it should also provide some context for those who saw "Millennium Actress" at the beginning of the month (please note this movie is three hours long).
Tuesday June 22: Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll
7pm: Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator [2003] -- Chronicle of the late eighties skater who turned pro at 14 and by 17 was making over $100,000 a year. Too much money, too many drugs, and too much attention all add up to a spectacular and horrific fall from grace.
9pm: Heavy Metal Parking Lot [1986] -- Yes the title does explain it all. ** Note Changes**
Tuesday June 29: T.A. Night -- Musicians on Motorcycles
7pm: Cool As Ice [1991] -- Yes, that Cool As Ice.
9pm: Purple Rain [1984] -- Because Prince rules.
Booze or other intoxicant recommended.
R.S.V.P. pop fund, blah, blah, blah...

Fucknuggets
My landlord has got the right idea for income right now and has the grand plan to sell the Clubhouse building. On Saturday (already! the place may have been listed for lass than a week), the realtor is coming over to tour the place.
I hate this so much. I hope I get a landlord half as decent as the last one. And I really hope that the new owner doesn't want to get rid of the building or up the rent. Because the only reason this place is so livable is because of the repairs and painting that has gone on because of us.
Five years in one very awesome place may be ending soon. If that happens I have no idea what will happen.

another of christian's hare-brained schemes...
I'm sure this idea will die in mediocrity just like the camping one, but I thought I'd mention it. kismet or something, as I keep encountering the idea in different places...
I propose we bring back a time-old tradition of clubhouse intramurals. the football games we had were legendary, tho were generally limited to, at most, a five on five format. I suspect this is because tossing around the ol' pigskin is a bit too elitist for those of the more pussy persuasion. so I propose a game more fitting of a general audience... folks, let's all grope our inner child, head out to the old ballyard and play a little kickball!
the great thing about kickball is that it requires very little athletic prowess. the ball is clumsy and big and awkward. even the best kickers flub it half the time, and it's unweildy as hell, which makes any truly painful peltings in the basepaths unlikely. but mostly, it's just fun. shit, even I could play it as a kid, and I was a TOTAL git as a kid. sad to think I'm waaaaay more athletic now than I was twenty years ago. for those who witnessed my football performance, this is indeed impressive.
I'll gladly pick up one of those big red four-square balls to donate to the clubhouse toy chest if we could get some people together and a field to play on, preferably when I'm up there. we'd want at least six per team, but any baseball derived sport lends itself well to playing with a bare minimum of players: ghost runners, pitcher's hand, etc. we could get by with as few as three on a side without requiring TOO much chasing the ball in the field, tho it would make for an offensive slugfest. I imagine the fewer players we have, the wider the basepaths should be.
is anyone up for it? it's a simple game. you throw the ball, you catch the ball, you kick the ball. sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains (it's most fun this way). but as long as paul is there, we can all get in lots of target practice...

The Month's Rundown
(For Those Too Lazy to Read The Infrequently Updated Calendar)
Thursday is Games Night. With me being sick, I'll try to be up and running. This month's features also include RoboRally.
Friday is Harry Potter as discussed in some post in the May archive page.
Saturday is Pitt Meadows Day, but while I will be in Pitt MEadows, I will not be attending.
______________________________
The following weekend we are leaving for Seattle. Miyuki, Owen, I need to know when you can leave. Both Grae and I are off that day entirely and lunch at Jack-in-the-Box appeals to me.
______________________________
Birthday celebrations appear to be in order much later in the month for Christian, Paul's and my own birthdays. Saturday June 26th.
Girls' night will resume on the 27th as originally planned.

ten days, nineteen hours, fourteen minutes and forty-six seconds...
oh. my. god.
I'm never going to get all of the semen cleaned out of my keyboard. I don't need to sleep tonight, either. I'll just watch this over and over and over.
one day, I will marry zach braff.

Woot!
I may actually have a job in Vancouver! Joy!
I'll blog more about it on my own site later. I just had to do my electronic jump for joy somewhere.
UPDATE----------
By the way, I'm also gradding on Wednesday at 2:30 at SFU. Anybody who happens to be up there is welcome to yell lewd things at me and my funny hat.
Damn, everything's coming up Paul this week!

DOXA (revisited)
I'm most likely not going to the doco-fest with movies about scrabble and freestyling tonight as I have way too many other engagements to deal with. Sorry, to anyone who has decided to go with me, but alas....Maybe another time.

Harry Potter
Are we going to make an event of the opening on June 4th? If we all want to get tickets in the same theatre we should organize soon.
Just to let you know next week is also International Environment Week. June 2nd is Clean Air Day. So remember to feel guilty and attempt a pretence of appearing green for at least half the week your grandchildren will thank you.

June Chaos
Well, it looks like there is a trip to Seattle for my birthday on the weekend of June 11-13.
In the one car so far is Graeme, Me and Miyuki.
_____________________________________________
Also, there have been some tentative Girls' nights being planned, but since I get back from Seattle on the 13th of June (the next scheduled one), I might not be able to make it (sorry, girls, but it also turns out they snuck an exam in for 10:30am the next morning, too).
The following weekend looks the most promising (the 20th) as some other major tentative plans are in the works for the 27th of June. I'm not saying anything as to not jinx it.

Asian Heritage Month at the D.o.S.
hey kids,
now that asian heritage month is just about over, i figured it was time to program a couple of banana flicks (also in honour of bob & rachel's shindig last weekend).
7pm: The Wedding Banquet [1993] -- Ang Lee's tale of a gay Tawainese yuppie happily living in New York with his boyfriend who decides to enter into a marriage of convenience with a shy Chinese immigrant desperately in need of a green card in order to appease his nagging parents. It seems like the perfect plan, until the 'rentals show up to plan the titular feast. Hilarity and heartache ensues.
9pm: Better Luck Tomorrow [2002] -- A bunch of overachieving Asian American kids go power trippin' with some criminal extra curricular activities. Yes, I know it sounds like an after school special but you know it isn't because you can count all of the Asians on American television (who don't read the news) on my hands. pop fund, rsvp, blah, blah, blah...
now that asian heritage month is just about over, i figured it was time to program a couple of banana flicks (also in honour of bob & rachel's shindig last weekend).
Also caused quite the sensation at Sundance when it premiered.

damn the man!
sorry folks, but the donnie darko screening at the SIFF is sold out. no tix to be had anywhere. they are planning on showing it in seattle sometime in july as a limited engagement, so maybe everyone can make a road trip down here then instead.
I asked about garden state, and was told there's no speculation it's in danger of selling out anytime soon. so if yous guys want to go see it, I suggest you make up your minds relatively soon and get some tickets. you can buy them here. this applies to everyone but miyuki. she gets free tickets for letting me grope her occassionally. and no, I won't buy anyone else free tickets if they let me grope them.
well, maybe bj.

moobies galore.
okey folks, miyuki is already planning to head down to visit me for the american memorial day long weekend (may 29-31). I'm thinking the rest of you might want to come as well. why? feast your eyes on this!
saturday, may 29, 6:30pm: donnie darko director's cut
saturday, may 29, midnight: a tale of two sisters
and the coup d'etat?
sunday, may 30, 9:30pm: drive in party. 281 minutes of gore! "Like a good zombie, the Drive-in Party is back after a two-year hiatus! The authentic drive-in experience was a lost SIFF tradition, originally resurrected for the 25th anniversary. Put away your lawn chairs and head out to the Valley 6 Outdoor Theatres in Auburn on Sunday, May 30th, for a triple bill of zombie mayhem and one French slasher flick, to be enjoyed in the vehicle of your choice!"
I'm planning to attend the two former movies... if we can get some more people willing to go, I'm thinking the latter would be a kick in the shorts as well. quit you're whining about not having money, that's what credit cards are for. quit bitching about exams or papers, you can always re-take the damn class. how often do you get a triple bill of fucking zombie movies at the drive-in?!
there is ample crash-space at the newly vacuumed Laboratory. come one, come some, and we'll have a jolly good time...

What I do in my spare time
So, the project I'm modeling for right now has a livejournal! Yay!
It can be found here.
Here is a synopsis by the creator, if anyone is interested in participating:
Of Shadows and Flame is a Photo/Graphic Novel currently in the initial stages of development.
The basic story is about a woman who, overwhelmed by the death of her lover, takes on a sort of super-heroine persona to, eventually, combat her personal shadows. She is granted the ability to enter other people's dreams and make changes...
The novel will be a collaboration between photographers, artists, cartoonists, etc. I intend this to become a venue for introducing and showcasing different writers and artists, as each dream-sequence would need to be produced by different artists.
Interested? Drop me a line at shadows_flame @ geoectomy.net.

A Meta-Review of "Supersize Me"
By Meta-Review, I mean one which pretty much looks through other reviews for what glimmers of truth they may have. This is all because I am too lazy to write a full review of my own. I liked it, but wasn't as sickened as some of the other people I know who have seen it.
"This attention-grabbing stunt is getting the film lots of free press, but it proves nothing that any normal doctor doesn?t already know about the links between bad food and bad health. Forget that this stunt is completely irresponsible; Spurlock is a healthy guy, and he succeeds only in trivializing people with real eating disorders. "
Yes, junk food is bad for you. This is nothing new. If I went on a all-cheese diet for a whole month, I bet my symptoms would be pretty bad too. (Not to mention that this was hardly a rigorous study, what with the sample-size of one.) This particular link also shows one of the strange bits that I found the movie. There was a scene in which an overweight teen is interviewed and talks about how there is so much pressure to be skinny. It seems to downplay the problem of body-image, and seems to suggest that perhaps the shame tactic is permissable, thereby trivializing the problems that overweight kids might have.
"Like several other areas of genuine concern, a maddeningly underdeveloped sequence depicting the deplorable state of our nation's school lunch programs is quickly wiped off the screen to make room for more long segments in which Spurlock prances around in his red-white-and-blue bikini briefs while tugging on his new love handles and whining about his "McStomach-ache."
The movie is funny and engaging. But the real important issues that it tackles are given far less time and concern as the apparent health degeneration of Spurlock, not to mention the scene in which he finds a hair in his sundae (OMG A HAIR!!!! APPALLING! That never happens at restaurants.)
I enjoyed the movie, but found certain aspects of it obvious, and others a little troubling. It's obviously severely biassed, and more than a little narcisistic, but brings up some imprtant issues. It hasn't encouraged me to stop eating fast-food (actually I haven't eaten McD's for some time now) but has persuaded me to get more excercise. (The fact that he wasn't excersizing was given far too little examination.)
In the end he offers very little in the way of solutions, sugggesting that McD's and other restaurants bear a lot of the brunt of responsibility which is really only part of the problem. The conclusion seemed too much diatribe, too little of anything constructive. People should see the movie, and it is a good step in making the world a healthier place, but watch it with a grain of salt.

wilderness adventures revisited
okay, we need to go camping. we need to go camping with alcohol. possibly a keg (funny side note, I've never actually drank from a keg). it has to be a keg of good beer tho.
we need to make some decisions. first of all, who is going? second, where are we going? third, when will we go?
please comment with your weekend availabilities (including possibilities for longish weekends or the three and four day varieties, not necessarily just holidays) between say, now and august. recommendations for locales would be keen as well.
nearby is good, no need to drive three days to sleep on the ground. cheap is gooder, as we're all pretty piss fucking poor.
I won't even mention camping in the states unless there's an overwhelming urge to. easier for me to drive up there...
so?

PacManhattan
Live action PacMan, played on several square blocks in Manhattan. This video made me smile.
It's amazing how difficult it is to translate Pacman into reality. One challenge is allowing pacman to know where all the ghosts are, without the ghosts knowing where pacman is. This requires (apparently) a great deal of technology and organization. Ironically, it seems the amount of data processing required to play pacman in real life (cell-phones and software for player-tracking) far surpasses that required by the original computer game.
PacVan anyone?
P.S. You can play a Flash version of pacman (and several other vintage games) here.

Just cuz, I love you all. (Sadly, it requires Real Video)
It appears I have broken the blog. I'm not sure how.

Ugh.
Super Size Me is highly recommended, and really unsettling.
Now I will eat only fresh veggies and cold water fish, for the rest of my life.
Or nothing. Yeah, nothing is good. Nothing forever.
That poor, dumb bastard.

The story of how Stupid Slut Tricks night became the weekly Den of Sin Movie Night.
Mariko used to be evil. A person that would go out of their way to decimate a person's dignity and soul. The best example of this was her weekly Stupid Slut Tricks night where she would troll bars and gather Stupid Sluts to her house with the promise of cocaine and cock. She would then make them perform stupid tricks or stunts and make them snort laundry detergent. While I found this to be drunkenly amusing for the first couple of weeks I quickly sobered to the fact, while burying the bodies in a wet shallow grave in Ladner, that what she was doing was wrong. Well long story short we discovered together the teachings of Jesus, repented our old ways and now every tuesday we watch a double feature of Kick Ass Films instead of murdering drunken sluts while Bauhaus plays loudly. With this in mind I bring the rest of May's Den of Sin Program.

The President's Choice of Star Wars or (In another Galaxy Far, Far Away)
7:00PM - TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR (1983): "This is an extremely rare example of science fiction, Hong Kong style. But, fittingly, it's unlike any sci-fi flick you've ever seen. Alien abductions, suicide pacts, superstardom, and the reality of science fiction itself is spotlighted in this bright, crazy, truly out of this world epic--one of the more unusual movies in the Hong Kong cinema of the early 1980s. And if you know '80s Hong Kong cinema at all, you know that's really saying something!" - HK FLIX
9:00PM - MESSAGE FROM SPACE (1978): Now we all know Fukasaku rules right. His contributions for his Gangster films alone already makes him a King but then he makes "Battle Royale". Hail to the motherfucking King baby. Shortly after "Star Wars" came out Fukasaku decided to make his own sci fi epic(though the Japanese have been making Space Operas years before Lucas' chins got around to it [to be fair he only had one at the time]) and got Sonny Chiba to play a guy named Hans! Special Thank You to the Duke for lending me his copy.

"ARE THESE GUYS RETARDED OR WHAT!?" DOCU NIGHT
7:00PM - JEFFTOWNE (1998): a DOCU about 38 yr old Jeff Towne. He lives with his 96 yr old senile foster mother, drinks beer, watches and draws porn, loves wrestling and has Downs Syndrome. This cheapie doc manages suprisingly not to be exploitive, it just follows Jeff on his daily routine (Drinking, Porn). I guess the lesson here is, "Aren't we all drunken horny retards?". Yes, yes we are.
9:00PM - THE BACKYARD (2002): That's right we're watching a doc about Backyard wrestling. These dudes are fucking harsh. Barb wire, household chemicals, lightbulbs, staple guns HELL YEAH! WWE is a pack of pussies. Hope you enjoy.

Games night TONIGHT
Sorry about the late notice, but nights like these are about having nothing else to do, right?
Tonight there is a games night at the Clubhouse, feel free to bring a board game or a multi-player gmae for the GameCube or PS2 (although, there may be some restrictions on use of technology to ensure something more social than "fuck you!" is occurring--we'll see about the turn out and such).
I know that the website says Saturday but there is no way I can attend as I'm going to Cirque de Soleil.
Try to be here around 7:30-8pm

everyone else is doing it, so why can't I?
I'm not so keen on my draw. and while graeme and corinne have obscure tastes, mine is merely bad. which is, in its own poetic way, obscure...
1. I haven't gone anywhere but out of my body
2. there are still some things that make us all the same. you. me. them.
3. when I was driving once I saw this painted on a bridge: "I don't want the world, I just want your half
4. then we'll get to the fact that it's always my fault, just because you're breaking my heart
5. they think I'm crazy, they don't that I like it here
6. I hear you're looking for someone to love
7. I'll never win a title, and I'll never win the cup, but when it comes to ladies, I've had the best of luck
8. for you I bleed myself dry
9. trudging slowly over wet sand
10. finally I've found that I belong here
11. to forgive but never forget, so the past reappears
12. life is peaceful, in the open air
13. we slip and slide as we fall in love
14. think I'm drunk enough to drive you home now
15. it's that time of year again, I can taste the air
16. you give me so much love that it blows my brains out
17. say after me, 'it's no better to be safe than sorry'
18. formal photographs refuse to mention his tiny feet, that birthmark on her knee
19. 'cause there's no place that I could be without you
20. your ears are full of the language, there’s wisdom there you’re sure

1) "Babydoll, should I give up…Yeah!"
2) "Do you think you've made the right decision this time?"
3) "Look at all those stars, look at how goddamn the stars are"
4) "It's all syncopated to your hard heart's heartbeat time"

6) "the only cure for my sorrow: free your soul, don't follow"
7) "Keep sending space monkeys, Nasa's trying to play us. Keep sending em and we'll send back Dr Zaius."
8) "a flash of life like lightning electric blinding blue reminded me of you."

17) "And if I were the king of all the kids, you'd here me singing in my spit."
18) When the world is too dark, And I need the light inside of me, I’ll walk into a bar, And drink fifteen pints of beer
19) "i’d rather hum or have my soul tattooed to my tongue and let the scriptures be sung in gibberish as words be simple fish in my soulquarium"

Per Christian's Demands
1. It died an ugly death by back catalogue.
2. Might as well start my drinking days now if I'm really alone
3. Your father made fetuses with flesh licking ladies while you and your mother were asleep in the trailer park
4. By the way I say your name I always know, and by the way, I always say your name.
5. And our sea sick smiles screaming sweet nausea
6. And that's when we'll explode (and it won't be a pretty sight)
7. They revamped the airport completely now it looks just like a night club
8. And your Mom would stick a fork right into Daddy’s shoulder
9. Note to self : No one cares. Your voice is average.
10. Lack of consequence has got me making decisions based upon truth or dare decision making.
11. If we never meet again it would be too soon.
12. Did I open an old wound?
13. We couldn't help but call it treason

Silly things my friends none of you know do:
On your current playlist, hit shuffle and pick the first twenty songs on the list (no matter how cheesy or embarrassing), and write down your favorite line of the song. Try to avoid putting the song title in the line. Then, have your friends comment and see if they know the songs.

Moobie-related goodness...
Eva and I (and probably Bree and Nick) will be gorging ourselves on Super Size Me on Saturday. Looks like a mid-afternoon show, though flexible. Anybody else interested?
Side notes: Saw Touching the Void, an excellent semi-documentary about two intrepid yet deeply unwise young Brits tackling an Andean peak for which they were woefully unprepared. Completely conventional, yet gripping nonetheless.
Finally saw Spirited Away, confirming me once again to be several years behind the trends (damn, I'm totally indifferent to anime, however good). And Bubba Ho-Tep is finally out on DVD, freeing me from the mummy-like clutches of Christian's incessant mockery.
That is all.

wilderness adventures?
so my birfday is coming up next month, and I'm thinking it would kick ass to go camping for a long weekend at the end of june.
problem with camping, it's only fun when you're getting drunk and pishing in the woods with your friends. so who would be game for a weekend of woodland debauchery? sometime around the weekend of june 25, with either the friday or monday to make a three day weekend?

this ends here.
paul has been quite insistent on deeming me successor to his title of "queen of booze"... I feel he jumped the gun and should be stuck with his hooch bitch status forever. he's been eagerly waiting for anyone to make any sort of ass of themselves to he could spring the title on me. but really, let's discuss this.
paul claims the consensus of the party was that I committed enough attrocities to earn the title. there are two problems with this claim.
a.) the general consensus of the party was in no position to make such a decision. first of all, how many people in saturday's attendance witnessed the pukin' paul incident? fair and accurate comparisons are necessary. plus, there were a lot of REALLY drunk motherfuckers at that party. I don't trust their judgment.
b.) the attrocities committed by your humble narrator could not possibly compare to vomitting the entire contents of one's stomach on such a sacred place as another's bed, site of sleep and sweet sweet lovin'.
did I take certain liberties lifting my toga while drunk and pantsless? yes. were my boxer shorts lacking in proper closure at the fly? yes. did I punch paul in the cack on a BRILLIANT no look jab? yes. did I do my damnedest to scare the crap out of peyvan as a drunken lech? yes. did I just generally act like a total git for much of the night? yes.
however, none of these crimes are even in the same league as depositing several pints worth of disgusting hazmat on a bed. I feel the only possible way to top the pukin' paul incident would be to totally shite oneself on someone else's bed, a la spud from trainspotting. that's really the only thing more vile and disgusting than paul's vomitus.
paul should be punished for his slander. let us all remember the story of the boy who cried wolf, and keep this in mind next time he attempts to excrete his despicable badge of dishunour on another innocent victim. and we should all cockpunch him until he pukes.
please, feel free to discuss. I would LOVE to hear how paul could possibly justify his argument, and wouldn't mind hearing from this "general consensus" that paul claims exists...
I mean REALLY paul, if you wanted to pick on the truly disgusting, why not attack bj and his choice of lawn decoration? personally, I thought that was totally awesome, especially the "edward pussyhands" marker left on top of it. but I guess other people were disturbed by both the fact that bj's puke resembled far too closely its previous life as phad thai, and the fact that every chunk of noodle was EXACTLY the same length (thus leading to bj's admission that he's a robot).

Friend seeking accomodations
Hey all,
My friend Shannon from Campbell River is moving back to the big smoke for a year to do her BEd at UBC and is looking to share accomodations to mitigate the cost of living around here. Anybody looking for a roomie who currently lives on, or is thinking of moving to, one of the major UBC bus routes in Vancouver?

Hey. You like movies?
Hey I'm on time you ungrateful ingrates. As usual we promise more entertainment space battles, drunken retard, Gimli versus Dragons and other good and not so good stuff. There were going to be space boobies this month unfortunately something even sweeter resurfaced in my brain.
MAY 4TH - MYSTERY STORE SCREENERS NIGHT
Today in history a Dutch guy showed up on some island that would later be Manhattan (then New Amsterdam). It's also Bird Day and in observance to those I bring you
7:00pm - DRAGON STORM: Apparently an Ill recieved Sci Fi channel TV Movie. But hey Gimli's in it and they are Dragons. And unlike Reign of Fire we already know it sucks thereby lessening the blow. TROGDOR!!!
9:00pm - DEATHWATCH: It's like Predator but in a WWI no man's land! Or at least that's how it was described to me. looking back this is definetely a program for the brave or for those with low standards (you know who you are).

noo car.
so folks, I need a new car. problem is, I can't really afford one. figure the best I can do is something in the $8-$12k range, which would give me a monthly payment around $200 a month.
that leaves me with two options. option A is to get a shitty new disposable car, like a kia or hyundai. option B is to get a nicer used car, few years old with some miles on it, thinking civic or jetta range.
I can't decide. the idea of a brand new car is appealing, but having a NICE car would be grand as well.
please discuss pros and cons.

Are we sufficiently fanmonkeyish to go south for this?
SEATTLE (AP) _ The director's cut of the cult favourite Donnie Darko, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a teenager tormented by visions of a giant, evil rabbit, will premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival next month.
Organizers are expecting the May 29 showing to draw one of the biggest crowds at the festival's 30th anniversary.
``Already, people are going crazy over the fact that it's been announced it's going to play at the festival,'' festival spokeswoman Kathleen McInnis said Monday. ``So I can only imagine what the turnout is going to be.''
Donnie Darko, which co-stars Drew Barrymore and Gyllenhaal's sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, created a cult following after its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001. It features elaborate special effects, a rarity for independent films because of the cost.
The director's cut ``has quite a bit of added footage and a more complete story line,'' McInnis said.
Newmarket Films, which distributed Donnie Darko, will rerelease the movie in Seattle theatres after the festival, which runs May 20-June 14, McInnis said.

Officially An Artist
I'm getting my sketch of gears published on the cover of 9,000 student handbooks this fall.
Reserve your free copy via me. Sure, it's going to say Capilano, but it's my artwork, and isn't that better than what SFU or UBC can offer?

alcoholism is your friend.
it's a whole new ballgame.
for this weekend's festivities, I have taken the liberty of acquiring beer. lots of beer. about US$50 worth of beer. and there are stakes.
owen has proclaimed that we will all fall before the might of his olde english high gravity. that may well be. but I propose a challenge. I need a champion, a warrior worthy of owen. a combatant with the intestinal fortitude to handle two forties of CAMO 40 SILVER ICE HIGH GRAVITY LAGER. this shit is XXXXX strength, 9.0% alcohol by volume. it's the strongest malt liquor I could find, easily blowing owen's pussy old E away by a full percentage point.
whomever accepts my challenge of championing the camo 40 will receive a bonus sidearm. a small bottle of skull splitter orkney ale. it's only a 330mL bottle, but it's 8.5% alcohol. this is some seriously strong shit, folks. I've had it before. it's awesome. it comes in a kickass bottle too, so it has some trade value with owen to be sure.
additionally, there is a special bob-only stipulation. I'm buying the booze, I can make silly rules. if bob accepts my challenge (and folks, he gets first crack), he will hold a special esteem. for if he manages to defeat owen in this battle royale, he will officially relinquish his title of "bitch" for an indeterminate amount of time, guaranteed to be at least the remainder of the weekend. well, at least _I_ won't treat him like the bitch, and I encourage all others to focus entirely on paul as well (okay, and maybe a little at me).
and as if all of this wasn't perfect enough, there is a grand prize to be awarded to the champion of edward fortyhands: toga edition. I have acquired a very rare bottle of dogfish head 120 minute IPA. this is some serious shit, and cost over US$10 a bottle. definitely a suitable prize for such a noble pursuit...
additionally, some arrangements have been made for the lightweights of the group (I'm thinking miyuki, corinne, mariko, etc, NOT paul), because I don't want to be taking care of a shitfaced miyuki again. I have acquired two armaments of 22oz bottles. miyuki gets the saku pilsners, and I have two 22s of fate tire ale as well. fat tire is some seriously good shit, btw.
so, here's the breakdown thus far:
competitive round:
olde english high gravity - owen
mickey's fine malt liquor - christian
camo 40 silver ice - ???
colt 45 - ???
girly round:
saku pilsner - miyuki
fat tire - ???
pussy caesars - paul
now, I just need to figure out how to smuggle all of this hooch over the border... and dammit folks, people better drink all this beer...

Monday Rant - Health Care Hellride
While I was sitting in a line of traffic for 30 minutes this morning, thanks to a health care worker blockade, I noticed that the slogans on their placards seemed to point to one thing: more money. I suppose we're the employer in this case, so how much more?
Are you curious about how a nurse hired at $60,000 per year actually makes $80,000 annually? So was I. Apparently, the union contract specifies a minimum number of days be alloted as sick leave. Typically, it equates to at least two per month. So here's the scam: Nurse A calls in sick Friday regardless of how she feels that morning. Her friend, Nurse B, has the day off...BUT, is sitting by the phone that day waiting for someone to call her in to fill in for A. Nurse B earns double pay but hasn't worked any overtime because she calls in sick on Monday and Nurse C comes in to earn double pay.
Is it any wonder why public workers aren't welcome in the private sector?
Rights? Security? Try pure greed. I cherished even the worst job I've ever worked, for one simple reason: IT PAYS THE RENT. Believe me, the urge to speed through the blockade was very high this morning...I guess their contract bars them from treating each other outisde working hours. not to mention that there's noone ACTUALLY working at the hospital. Whoops.

Hello darling friends,
I was wondering if any of you would be available next Saturday to help me move? I will provide pizza if you show up. I am renting a truck so we should be able to complete it in two trips. Post to the comments or email/phone me if you are available. Thank you all very much.

Kill Bill...
So was there any consensus regarding Kill Bill Vol. 2? The entire upcoming weekend seems to be fertile with potential viewing times, judging from the fiery debate a few days ago. May I suggest forcing ourselves into a Friday premiere?
That said, I'm content with any time up to about 2 o'clock on Sunday... but I'm not watching this one by myself in Victoria. None of the other interns are movie nutsos... and seeing Kill Bill with people who loved S.W.A.T. seems like it misses the whole point.
P.S. The Girl Next Door rockmonkeyed.

Remember the goodness that was the Purple Onion's Halloween shindig? They're doing the whole "80s in one room, Industrial in the other" dealie on Sunday the 11th. It kicked some ass last time, so Briana, Nick, Eva and I are heading out, and all others should find the time somehow. The cover's only $5, and the next day's a holiday, so very few of us have excuses... plus I'll buy a pitcher or two.
kill bill?
so, if I was to head up to the norseland the weekend of april 16, would anyone be up for a screening of kill bill vol 2? perhaps a sunday matinee with a screening of vol 1 saturday night? I know there's at least one person who hasn't seen the first yet, and someone has got to buy the dvd when it gets released...
who's game?

Everything's Was All Fine and Dandy w/ Regards to Copyrights...
Until some fucking politician has to stick her fucking finger into the whole thing. I guess the courts just aren't good enough for her. What a jack-ass.
I'm not much of a letter-writer, but this angers me enough...

HELLBOY SPOILERS!
Well, not really.
A lot of people decided against going to see Hellboy tonight because of monetary issues, but I found out tonight that all Famous Players locations have removed the cheap matinee showings and reduced the price of evening showings. The end result is that all showings regardless of the time will cost $10.69 or something close to it. I don't know if cheap tuesdays are still in effect, but I assume they are, although they won't be as cheap percentage-wise. Just a heads up.

Translation of Poo Animation:
Remember the link Mike gave us a few days back?
Here's the translation, from Metafilter:
To begin with: "Unga" means poo.
I don't like byunbi [constipation]
I like kwaebyun [opposite of constipation]
When the sun shines, I run to the bathroom
The things I ate yesterday leave my body
Did you eat a chamwai [Korean pear]? Check! Matdongsan! [Korean snack]
Did you eat a watermelon? Check! Chocolate-chip cookie!
Did you have some milk? Check! Joripong! [Korean snack]
I don't like byunbi [constipation]
I like kwaebyun [opposite of constipation]
Good good, today I want to make
Pretty-shaped poo
Put some force into it! Check! Peanut!
Shake your hips! Check! Koolkwabaegi! [Korean snack]
Go round and round! Check! Onion ring!
Today too, be strong and push it out and excrete!
[End credit:] Until the day when everybody can start the morning with a kwaebyun [opposite of constipation] ...
And knowing is half the battle.

Now I get to pretend I'm important!
Woot! I get to fly from Victoria to Vancouver tomorrow after work!
This probably doesn't really interest anyone else, but I haven't been on a plane in years and it takes me right to downtown Van in half an hour. Joy! Makes me feel special cuz I don't have to pay for it...
UPDATE
Ok, it seems I *will* be in Vancouver for at least the next week (possibly 2). This time, thank the spiteful gods, I'll be working on Robson, rather than thrice-damned PoCo, so I should have both the time and energy to engage in downtown shenanigans. Trap and Gill, movies, and 80's night come to mind...
