Christmas Party

Hey, I have been meaning to do a lot more than I have. The following is a list of things meant to be done this year but have miserably failed:

1. Christmas cards. A shout out to those who actually got their shit in gear and got the cards out. Props go far to Mariko for sending hers the earliest. It also helps that I only raked in a scant 6 or so addresses, and was going to scout out theother dozen or so friend cards and another dozen or so family cards. So... I have your cards, they're just at my place.

2. Along with said cards were going to be Christmas party invitations. Really cool ones with instructions and possibly pirate themed. As you can see that I got left at the design phase. I can poop out a mailout in about 4 hours, but here, we are, more than 4 hours later, and no invitations.

3. Plan a hand-made gift exchange. I suppose there is still time to do that, but I'm thinking the gifts might be a little on the scrimpy side with such short notice.

4. Bake cookies! Again, while there might be time, there are other pending issues needing to be done (like actually acquiring Christmas gifts and wrapping them in time). Maybe I'll make New Year's cookies.

Instead, I beat Zelda: Twilight Princess and set up my tree. I made handmade ornaments for it to make sure it wasn't sparsely decorated (even after making a bunch of ornaments, it was still naked, so I bought some extras).

BUT NOW! I am ready and prepared to announce a Christmas party that has yet to be officially announced. A few weeks back I sent out a "it's coming this night" email to a bunch of you, and to wait for further instructions (Which were going to be in the mail, but... number one thing of things I didn't do). But I still love you all, even if I've been socially hibernating (sometimes unintentionally).

In conclusion: Come to my party on Saturday. Bring your egg nogs, your rum, your hot toddies, your friends, your plus-ones, your parents (if they've got nothing better to do), something to drink, a snack to share if you can (veggies, dips, chips, crackers & cheese, etc.), and last but not least: yourselves. Also: gift wrapped empty boxes so my tree looks way less humiliating are being accepted. I also have no problem with people exchanging gifts among each other and if there is enough of a interest, I can set aside a time when that will happen.

Core group, I ask that you give me a solid RSVPASAP as it'll give me a mini-gift head count.

In case you missed it...

There will be a pajama housewarming party on Saturday April 15th. I'll probably start in the early afternoon, maybe with some video games, pirates, tour of my neighbourhood, etc. I'll order in pizza dinner (for the movers in my life this weekend, your pizza will be FREE!) and pop in the first movie. Intermission will occur and popcorn will be popped (maybe... I need a microwave/popper before then), maybe some chips or other snack-like items. Feel free to bring snacks yourself. I'll plunk in a second movie, which we will inevitably talk through. Perhaps some gaming to follow? It's going to be looser that I am outlining, so feel free to throw suggestions into the pile.

Cake and singing will be offered for birthday girls in attendance.

Tomorrow Night at the D.o.S.

Hey Kids!!

We're back (for real now) and we're rested and we've got photos to show you! So come by our place tomorrow at 7pm for more Meiko Kaji (a.k.a. Female Convict Scorpion).

7pm: Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion [1972] -- The first of the FCS films, wherein we find out why Scorpion is in prison, why she is called "Scorpion" and why she kicks so much ass!

9pm: Female Slave Ship -- It doesn't even really matter what it's about, it's a Japanese exploitation movie with women in chains riding the high seas and.... Pirates!!!! Yes, you read that right! Special prize awarded for whoever can keep track of how many times the upper hand changes hands (seriously, seriously convoluted).

RSVP if you can (especially since we're getting back into the swing of things, a handle on numbers would be good), bring money for the pop fund and let me know if you want something other than Pepsi.

See you there,

~meeko

The Seventh Seal
You are Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal. You are
on a neverending crusade to interrupt the
silence of God. You desire to know secrets
that aren't yours to know. You probe too
deeply, and tussle with death. Ultimately,
there is nothing.

So I'm gay and I tussle with death.

I also slack at work.

I keep meaning to write about all the flicks I keep going to, but I just never get around to it. I guess I'll start with 28 Days Later. And of course, as always, spoilers are to be highlighted. The movie opens with a Coalition for the Liberation of Itinerant Tree Dwellers (or C.L.I.T.) style invasion to rescue what seems to be abused chimps and other cute little monkeys. However, in the midst of the rescue attempt, one of the reseach scientists enters in and calls security. El scientisto is able to give the warning that the monkeys that they are trying to save have been infected with a virus/"rage". And sure enough, as the cages are opened, the monkey's virus spreads, and the scientist attempts to block the virus from spreading in the only known way: killing the host before they can vomit blood on anyone else, or attack them in a zombie-vampire like rage. 28 days later we see a naked, unshaven Cillian Murphy lying in a hospital bed. He awakes to silence and emptiness all around London. I'm impressed at how silent and vacant the director (Danny Boyle, Trainspotting) managed to get the city. It becomes obvious when you recognize that it is almost always twilight in the movie in populated areas. The filming of those scenes apparently were a matter of minutes of open time, club-goers were the only people out at that time. Super cool. I think the parts that I liked the most about it was that it created an alarmingly realistic portrait of how the world would react to a virus of that calliber and nature. It portrayed human nature as very competative for survival, and showed how much humans are social creatures dependant on others to survive. And it posed the great question: Why survive? Why would one want to live through hell for the matter of living through hell and no other promise? For Hannah and her father it was a matter of making sure the other one is alright. For Jim and Selena, it seemed that they didn't entirely know why they were moving forward other than the basic instinct to survive. And then, it comes back to why would you fight to survive? I really liked this movie a lot, and will buy the R1 DVD when it comes out.

Also seen this weekend was Spellbound. A documentary about the US National Spelling Bee championship thingy. The story follows eight very diverse kids on their way to the nationals. I wonder how the documentarians decided who to follow, or if they followed hundreds and whittled it down to the remaining 8. Those that were removed early on in the competition were the more fascinating of the stories, I found. And my favourite was Harry Altman. The best part was a local Hooters arranged their sign to say "Congradulations" to the regional champion. Another town misspelled "champ." Those were nice touches to showing the importance of spelling. But who's to say that knowing how to spell "heleoplankton" is a vital skill? Is the spelling important or the studying and determination the value attained at these competitions?

There. I've got around to posting again.

Next week (July 9th) is Pirate Day. This means dressing like a pirate to the opening of The Pirates of the Carribean: Blah Blah Curse Blah Black Pearl.
