noo car.

so folks, I need a new car. problem is, I can't really afford one. figure the best I can do is something in the $8-$12k range, which would give me a monthly payment around $200 a month.

that leaves me with two options. option A is to get a shitty new disposable car, like a kia or hyundai. option B is to get a nicer used car, few years old with some miles on it, thinking civic or jetta range.

I can't decide. the idea of a brand new car is appealing, but having a NICE car would be grand as well.

please discuss pros and cons.

Are we sufficiently fanmonkeyish to go south for this?

SEATTLE (AP) _ The director's cut of the cult favourite Donnie Darko, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a teenager tormented by visions of a giant, evil rabbit, will premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival next month.

Organizers are expecting the May 29 showing to draw one of the biggest crowds at the festival's 30th anniversary.

``Already, people are going crazy over the fact that it's been announced it's going to play at the festival,'' festival spokeswoman Kathleen McInnis said Monday. ``So I can only imagine what the turnout is going to be.''

Donnie Darko, which co-stars Drew Barrymore and Gyllenhaal's sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, created a cult following after its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001. It features elaborate special effects, a rarity for independent films because of the cost.

The director's cut ``has quite a bit of added footage and a more complete story line,'' McInnis said.

Newmarket Films, which distributed Donnie Darko, will rerelease the movie in Seattle theatres after the festival, which runs May 20-June 14, McInnis said.

Officially An Artist

I'm getting my sketch of gears published on the cover of 9,000 student handbooks this fall.

Reserve your free copy via me. Sure, it's going to say Capilano, but it's my artwork, and isn't that better than what SFU or UBC can offer?

alcoholism is your friend.

it's a whole new ballgame.

for this weekend's festivities, I have taken the liberty of acquiring beer. lots of beer. about US$50 worth of beer. and there are stakes.

owen has proclaimed that we will all fall before the might of his olde english high gravity. that may well be. but I propose a challenge. I need a champion, a warrior worthy of owen. a combatant with the intestinal fortitude to handle two forties of CAMO 40 SILVER ICE HIGH GRAVITY LAGER. this shit is XXXXX strength, 9.0% alcohol by volume. it's the strongest malt liquor I could find, easily blowing owen's pussy old E away by a full percentage point.

whomever accepts my challenge of championing the camo 40 will receive a bonus sidearm. a small bottle of skull splitter orkney ale. it's only a 330mL bottle, but it's 8.5% alcohol. this is some seriously strong shit, folks. I've had it before. it's awesome. it comes in a kickass bottle too, so it has some trade value with owen to be sure.

additionally, there is a special bob-only stipulation. I'm buying the booze, I can make silly rules. if bob accepts my challenge (and folks, he gets first crack), he will hold a special esteem. for if he manages to defeat owen in this battle royale, he will officially relinquish his title of "bitch" for an indeterminate amount of time, guaranteed to be at least the remainder of the weekend. well, at least _I_ won't treat him like the bitch, and I encourage all others to focus entirely on paul as well (okay, and maybe a little at me).

and as if all of this wasn't perfect enough, there is a grand prize to be awarded to the champion of edward fortyhands: toga edition. I have acquired a very rare bottle of dogfish head 120 minute IPA. this is some serious shit, and cost over US$10 a bottle. definitely a suitable prize for such a noble pursuit...

additionally, some arrangements have been made for the lightweights of the group (I'm thinking miyuki, corinne, mariko, etc, NOT paul), because I don't want to be taking care of a shitfaced miyuki again. I have acquired two armaments of 22oz bottles. miyuki gets the saku pilsners, and I have two 22s of fate tire ale as well. fat tire is some seriously good shit, btw.

so, here's the breakdown thus far:

competitive round:
olde english high gravity - owen
mickey's fine malt liquor - christian
camo 40 silver ice - ???
colt 45 - ???

girly round:
saku pilsner - miyuki
fat tire - ???
pussy caesars - paul

now, I just need to figure out how to smuggle all of this hooch over the border... and dammit folks, people better drink all this beer...

Monday Rant - Health Care Hellride

While I was sitting in a line of traffic for 30 minutes this morning, thanks to a health care worker blockade, I noticed that the slogans on their placards seemed to point to one thing: more money. I suppose we're the employer in this case, so how much more?

Are you curious about how a nurse hired at $60,000 per year actually makes $80,000 annually? So was I. Apparently, the union contract specifies a minimum number of days be alloted as sick leave. Typically, it equates to at least two per month. So here's the scam: Nurse A calls in sick Friday regardless of how she feels that morning. Her friend, Nurse B, has the day off...BUT, is sitting by the phone that day waiting for someone to call her in to fill in for A. Nurse B earns double pay but hasn't worked any overtime because she calls in sick on Monday and Nurse C comes in to earn double pay.

Is it any wonder why public workers aren't welcome in the private sector?

Rights? Security? Try pure greed. I cherished even the worst job I've ever worked, for one simple reason: IT PAYS THE RENT. Believe me, the urge to speed through the blockade was very high this morning...I guess their contract bars them from treating each other outisde working hours. not to mention that there's noone ACTUALLY working at the hospital. Whoops.

Kill Bill...

So was there any consensus regarding Kill Bill Vol. 2? The entire upcoming weekend seems to be fertile with potential viewing times, judging from the fiery debate a few days ago. May I suggest forcing ourselves into a Friday premiere?

That said, I'm content with any time up to about 2 o'clock on Sunday... but I'm not watching this one by myself in Victoria. None of the other interns are movie nutsos... and seeing Kill Bill with people who loved S.W.A.T. seems like it misses the whole point.

P.S. The Girl Next Door rockmonkeyed.

The Return of The Tuesday Night Reminder

7pm: Suspiria [1977] -- The beautiful restored DVD of Argento's masterwork.

Fucking Dead Jesus Day (or really Undead Jesus Day)

I forgot it was Easter today and everyone has family dinner tonight (including us [we found out the last minute]) however we have a lovely friend staying with us the next couple of days and we're still watching Kill Bill tonight preceded by a few minutes of the Nick and Jessica Variety Hour which we'll see how much we can stand before popping in the DVD. I promise fun. So come by 9 if any of you all are into that.

Invitations...

Remember the goodness that was the Purple Onion's Halloween shindig? They're doing the whole "80s in one room, Industrial in the other" dealie on Sunday the 11th. It kicked some ass last time, so Briana, Nick, Eva and I are heading out, and all others should find the time somehow. The cover's only $5, and the next day's a holiday, so very few of us have excuses... plus I'll buy a pitcher or two.

kill bill?

so, if I was to head up to the norseland the weekend of april 16, would anyone be up for a screening of kill bill vol 2? perhaps a sunday matinee with a screening of vol 1 saturday night? I know there's at least one person who hasn't seen the first yet, and someone has got to buy the dvd when it gets released...

who's game?

Everything's Was All Fine and Dandy w/ Regards to Copyrights...

Until some fucking politician has to stick her fucking finger into the whole thing. I guess the courts just aren't good enough for her. What a jack-ass.

I'm not much of a letter-writer, but this angers me enough...

HELLBOY SPOILERS!

Well, not really.

A lot of people decided against going to see Hellboy tonight because of monetary issues, but I found out tonight that all Famous Players locations have removed the cheap matinee showings and reduced the price of evening showings. The end result is that all showings regardless of the time will cost $10.69 or something close to it. I don't know if cheap tuesdays are still in effect, but I assume they are, although they won't be as cheap percentage-wise. Just a heads up.

Translation of Poo Animation:

Remember the link Mike gave us a few days back?

Here's the translation, from Metafilter:

To begin with: "Unga" means poo.

I don't like byunbi [constipation]
I like kwaebyun [opposite of constipation]

When the sun shines, I run to the bathroom
The things I ate yesterday leave my body
Did you eat a chamwai [Korean pear]? Check! Matdongsan! [Korean snack]
Did you eat a watermelon? Check! Chocolate-chip cookie!
Did you have some milk? Check! Joripong! [Korean snack]

I don't like byunbi [constipation]
I like kwaebyun [opposite of constipation]

Good good, today I want to make
Pretty-shaped poo
Put some force into it! Check! Peanut!
Shake your hips! Check! Koolkwabaegi! [Korean snack]
Go round and round! Check! Onion ring!

Today too, be strong and push it out and excrete!

[End credit:] Until the day when everybody can start the morning with a kwaebyun [opposite of constipation] ...

And knowing is half the battle.

Now I get to pretend I'm important!

Woot! I get to fly from Victoria to Vancouver tomorrow after work!

This probably doesn't really interest anyone else, but I haven't been on a plane in years and it takes me right to downtown Van in half an hour. Joy! Makes me feel special cuz I don't have to pay for it...

UPDATE

Ok, it seems I *will* be in Vancouver for at least the next week (possibly 2). This time, thank the spiteful gods, I'll be working on Robson, rather than thrice-damned PoCo, so I should have both the time and energy to engage in downtown shenanigans. Trap and Gill, movies, and 80's night come to mind...
