I have four interested people so far...this is basically the warped minds behind Mr. Bungle...only without Mike Patton. I think you'll find SC3 to be an arabic synth trio that has gradually evolved into an eastern-influenced percussive ensemble featuring Montreal violinist Eyvind Kang.

I have all their albums and a live dvd if anyone cares for a sampling.

You should see this, really.

Back to the Mekong

Kate and I will be hitting the Mekong on the 30th, around about 7pm or so, followed by whatever. We'd love to have some company, because we're terribly lonely people.

Though I'm sure everyone else is already sick of the movie, we'll also probably (and finally) be seeing Harry Potter earlier that day.

noo yeerz

well, since no one else has stepped up to the plate w/ a new years plan, i figured we might as well make use of my brand new xmas present: a raclette/fondue set!!! if you don't know what raclette is, it's kinda like fondue, only instead of a pot, there's little dishes for cheese & a grill surface for your meats & veggies. you grill your meats or veggies on the grill plate and then use them to scrap up the bubbly cheese. delicious!

we figure we'll get started around 8pm, and everyone who wants to come can volunteer to bring a cheese, a meat/seafood, or veggies of their choosing. i'll provide a little bit of everything & fruit and chocolate fondue. the set itself is for 8 people, but there'll be other munchies and we can all take turns. there will probably also be card/board games & (obviously) some kind of movie. if other people have fondue sets they want to bring that's cool too.

rsvp in the comments & mention if you are bringing cheese/meat/seafood/veggies. oh, and byob.

hope to see you there.

holiday loot.

so amongst my xmas loot, I seem to have received two copies of 3-iron on dvd. great movie, but not something I'll need two of. it's gonna be a pain in the ass to return it to amazon (where it actually came from) and I don't know if I could return it to best buy without a receipt...

so, would anyone like this in exchange for another dvd? branch new, still in the plastic wrap, US packaging too. was hoping to exchange it for a copy of old boy (keep it in korean cinema, at least) but I'm not overly picky.

it's also somewhat amusing how out of touch my mother is... I mentioned wanting "hitchhiker's guide" on dvd... she got the bbc series. I didn't even know it was OUT on dvd. leave it to her to completely miss the somewhat large release of a current movie and opt for the obscure, twenty-five year old british miniseries...

In which I demonstrate how out of touch I am...

Finally saw Serenity. In English.

Had the choice of either renting it for 2 dollars or buying it for 40. I rented it.

Shoulda just bought the damn thing. Good odds I´ll watch it 19 more times anyways.

Birthday plans

As some of you may already know my birthday is on wednesday. To celebrate I was going to head down to the vetrans club on Main street(at corner of 24th) for karaoke after i get off work. You are all invited to come for a skate before hand at Riley Park Community Centre(30th and ontario) from 7 till whenever we feel like leaving. The first 45 minutes of the public is a cosom hockey session which means it's just stick and puck hockey with plastic sticks. If you want to come for a skate i'd recomend coming a bit before 7 and i may be able to get you free rentals(maybe).

I plan on being at the vetrans club around 8:30 so if you don't feel like skating i'll just meet you there. After karaoke I was thinking of going to Lotus for some dancing, probably sometime around 10:30 or 11. I'd love for you all to join me.

Call to all Narnians

There was some discussion last Saturday of going to a Sunday Matinee of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe after the Swank Christmas Party. Can we solidify this with a time and place?

Movie Nights Back on Track

Hey Kids,

I'm slightly less contagious now, so y'all are welcome back at my house!

The schedule:
Monday December 12/05: Verhoeven Night Part II
(Consider it an early Xmas Present)

7pm: Katie Tipppel [1975] -- Monique van de Ven (Turkish Delight) sleeps her way to the top as a poor girl forced into prostitution in turn of the century Holland. With a young & yummy Rutger Hauer (of course).

9pm: Soldier of Orange [1977] -- Verhoeven has described this as his favourite movie he's made & it's still considered a classic of Dutch cinema. Rutger Hauer stars as a college boy who joins the Dutch resistence with his friends during WWII for a "spot of adventure".

Also, don't forget that Friday (December 16th!!) is the 3rd Annual Xmassacre being held at Blim (197 E. 17th @ Main). Doors open at 7pm & remember to bring a wrapped "gift" for the Crappy Santa Gift Exchange. Afterparty at the Den starting around 11pm.

And last but not least, some of you may be aware that I've been chosen as a finalist in the CBC radio Definitely Not the Opera new film critic contest. Well, it turns out the judging is at least partially going to be done by the public. Please tune in this Saturday December 10 (tomorrow) between 3pm & 4pm to hear my review of "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe", then call or email and tell Sook-yin to give me the job.

I guess that's all. Hope to see you soon.

Hot Karaoke Gossip

I didn't hear anything AT ALL about this tonight, but I just checked online and found "our" Vancouver Courier article.

Thankfully, even though I was the most interviewed out of anyone in our group, I wasn't made to sound like a tool. In fact, I didn't sound like anything. B^)

In other news: when I was there tonight, Vincent and Steven B showed me what we called "The Prototype": a NEW good book with plenty of new songs. It was cleanly laid out, with two columns of songs down each page. It was so new that Ron expressly let Vincent and our table look at it and asked us not to share with anyone. Then, Darlene confiscated it. While I could recognize lots of songs from 2005, there wasn't a whole lot that I'd choose to sing, but it was still nice to look at anyway. One odd inclusion was a B-side from Franz Ferdinand.

And there's a bouncer at the door now, checking ID.

D.o.S. Schedule for December

Here it is kids, the December line up:

Monday Dec 5/05: Verhoeven Night Part 3

7pm: Katie Tippel [1975] -- Poor girl Keetje works her way up the social ladder from prostitute to the wife of a wealthy socialist in turn of the century Holland. Starring Monique van de Ven (Turkish Delight) & Rutger Hauer.

9pm: Soldier of Orange [1977] -- A group of middle-class college boys join the Dutch Resistance during World War II looking for an adventure. Featuring Rutger Hauer at his rugged best.

Monday Dec 12/05: Mech-Attack

7pm: Robot Jox [1990] -- Another one of those lost action classics from the early nineties. While not quite up there with "Robocop 2", it is directed by Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) and it features a Jeffrey Combs cameo. And giant mech-robots!!!!

9pm: Returner [2002] -- You've seen the trailer, now see the movie. Fairly standard Japanese Sci-Fi with lots of CG and of course, giant robots.

Friday Dec 16/05: 3rd Annual Xmassacre!!!
At Blim (17th @ Main). Door 7pm, Film at 8pm. Tell your friends!!!

Monday Dec 19/05: Horror Sequels Worth Another Look

7pm: The Amityville II: The Possession [1982] -- More of a prequel than a sequel, The Possession deals with the house's previous tenants and the evil spirits that possessed the son and led him to kill his family.
9pm: The Exorcist III [1990] -- Directed by William Blatty (who wrote the screenplay for original Exorcist as well as the novel), from his novel "Legion". Sadly, the studio was expecting more of a straight-up sequel & tacked on an exorcism in the final moments of the film causing some serious continuity issues.

Moving Day: December 10th

Hey I'm moving! East Vancouver bound...wondering if anyone would be available to help loading/unloading the van. I think it will go a lot smoother than last year, as I'm bringing boxes each day to work for temporary storage in my office. Mostly furniture left.

If you're available, I was hoping to pick up the truck by 7:30-8:00am and get started loading by 9:00am. I'll treat you to 'house of dosa' or something cool in the new neighborhood.

This Sat.

I know at least four of us are going to the Main Street local to sing our little hearts out this Saturday..
Join us for dinner first too..
Umm.. Call Bob for details..
(That'll work right??)
