June 11 (or 10)

Karaoke!

I've put it on both those days because of a rumoured other party. And since the host/ess has gone to bed (probably), I just wanted to say whatever night is not being occupied by a party will be karaoke night (I would like to see it on the 11th, ideally as I will have my little brother, probably).

I went out with Trevor (of T-Rev, Halloween fame) tonight to the Marble Arch's Karaoke lounge.

So, who wants Radiohead (Alex?), Nirvana, Judas Priest, The Smiths (only one song, Mariko, but they have a Morrissey song, too!), Slipknot, Helloween, Coldplay (I'm looking at you, Christian) or Iron Maiden? This place has a huge variety (no Modest Mouse, but I get the impression that when it gets released, they'll have it) and it's hourly room rates. They have a digital remote that loads up your track onto the screens and the videos that accompany are brilliant.

I want to keep the numbers for the rooms under 10 per room as we had a dozen and it was a bit too competitive for the mic. If you're interested you'll need to RSVP the comments (and which day you'd be able to make it).

I'd even enjoy myself if it was just ther three of us, but I know you kids would dig this place.

So what you do is go to the east end of Bridgeport Road (by ikea) and head north on Sweden Way until you hit Vulcan. Keep heading north until you ram into the portable where they sell those addictive mini-donuts.

My questions are:
a) how many are interested?
b) how many can contribute seats in a car?

We can always meet at someone's place (in east van) and take the 98 into richmond and find our way to Ikea via the website...or with a few cars (I have 3-4 seats available) we can drive to Ikea, park and walk the 3 blocks.

What to expect there for newbies: lots of snacks (including the signature chicken eggs by sam and dragon's beard candy), desserts, cell accessories, rides, maybe a crappy band, car accessories, knock-off transformers, toys, cheap scandals, jewelry, prints, shirts, asian dvds, PC accessories galore, karaoke dvds/vcds and the RCMP in search of episode 3 dvds.

As I'm finally moving into my own apartment again (the first of two or more I will occupy over the summer, damn it), I have much need of furnishings, kitchen gear, etc.

I'll be moving into Briana's old apartment around the 1st, so I'll be needing to reclaim such minor things as my bed, lamps, bike, the all-important rice cooker (preferably without Bob clinging madly to it and shrieking like a banshee) and just about everything else I outsourced. Sadly, Corinne and Grae, this may include the TV, though I'll confirm that in a few days.

We'll figure out actual transportation arrangements in the coming days...

Well here's the IMDB write-up (cause I'm lazy); Matsu, known to the prisoners as Scorpian, is locked away in the bowels of the prison as revenge for disrupting the smooth operation of the prison and for her disfiguring attack on the warden. Granted a one day reprieve due to the visit of a dignitary, she takes advantage and attacks the warden again. This leads to more brutal punishment and humiliation. But the punishment gives her an oppurtunity to escape along with six other female prisoners. Their surreal flight from prison pits the convicts against the guards, the warden and each other.

9PM SUKEBAN GUERILLA - Female bikers! Catfights! Gang violence! Sukeban Guerilla expands on classic exploitation "bad girl" archetypes with an explosive abandon. Fans of Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Hello Everyone,

Bob and I are hosting a party next weekend on Saturday, April 23rd at 7pm. Bob has gained my permission to have a social event at our house with much personal sacrifice (which I will leave to your imagination). This party is being held partly because we haven't had one in a very long time and mainly to welcome Paul back as he was so *luckily* not eaten by wild animals nor executed by our hitman (sigh, that's $10 wasted). Paul must show up and ceremoniously recieve back one token item from his possessions or he will forfeit the lot to us. (Though even if he shows up he is still going to have a heck of a time seperating Bob from the rice cooker.)

Party Clauses:
Anyone caught annoying a rabbit better be swift on their feet and have their passport handy. They also better have found a very secure hide out by the time my passport is renewed next month.

Don't let the cat out. It is too stupid to last long in the wilds of our back yard. He keeps trying to make friends with the raccoons that live there.

Teasing Bob is also strictly regulated. The only ones that can do it (without me suffering as well)are pretty girls. (That does not include you Paul)

You may also meet some "dialoguers" please read the informative website and don't ask them what they have been doing for the last three month as they don't know either.

Not admiring the beauty, intelligence and general wonderfulness of your hostess will be punished with dark looks and a lingering resentment. I will also do my best to start some malicious gossip about you. (Malicious gossip is also available as a reward for those so inclined. Price list available upon request)

It costs about the same as splitting the right number of Elvis platters. If we do the sushi thing, I'd like to get a party room. I was thinking Taisho, maybe some Karaoke in a private party room. It costs hourly to do so, so it would add to the bill. ($20-40 depending on Karaoke, drinks, etc.)

R.I.P. BASS WOLF 3/30/05

It's with deep and saddest regret to announce this latest Guitar Wolf news. Last night (3/30) Billy, aka Bass Wolf, passed away of natural causes. He was 38.

The band had just returned from their month-long US tour, and fortunately Billy did get to spend time with his wife and children before checking into the hospital. He died in his sleep sometime during the night.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and Guitar Wolf members Seiji and Toru.

The Japanese three piece, which formed in 1987, most recently released Loverock in 2004. Our deepest condolences go out to Billy's friends and family."

So the Americans are now living in a new Conservative era, however movies have not gotten as ridiculous as Hollywood did in the 80s under Reagan. The era of Schwarzenegger and Stallone. And these movies have dated, hard. Consider this a sociological study and BYOB cause you'll need it.

7PM: COBRA [1986] - UM Stallone. He wears sunglasses, has an laser-mount submachine gun, pearl-handles Colt .45 and uses a matchstick for a toothpick. Oh oh "CRIME IS A DISEASE. MEET THE CURE." is the tagline. So I'm not going to bother looking this up on IMDB I'm pretty sure this is going to be pretty darn ridiculous.

9PM: COMMANDO [1985] - Yeah Schwarzenegger. Uber one liners. Brutal body count. Written by the same guy who wrote the acclaimed "BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN". Ahh there'll be action.

MAR. 14th: POP STARS ON MOTORCYCLES ENCORE (and it's my birthday [on the 16th])

7PM: COOL AS ICE [1991] - This time for sure. We just don't put Damon in charge of getting it. Oh the movie. It's Vanilla Ice's big screen debut. What more you want? Quality? Screw you.

9PM: PURPLE RAIN [1984] - Seriously this movie is one of the few sincerely primal films I've ever seen. I can't say more except you have to see. I want a big turnout for Purple Rain.

So yeah. that's it for now.

SEATTLE TRIP!

Well, first there's the quintessential visit to Jack in the box, with the traditional breakfast consisting of bacon and egg on some form of bread, a fried potato patty and deep fried tacos. Leaves you praying for death for the next few hours.

The early afternoon was anchored around the Westlake shopping center from which each member of our intrepid band (and various permutations of said band) had access by foot or monorail to hot topic, suncoast video, electronics boutique, the largest (and scariest) cosmetics store in the western world (mary kay?), zanadu comics and the fish market (more than just fish, but that's all you can really smell). I'm still in amazement over the selection at Easy Street Music as well, take Zulu and triple it.

Later that afternoon, we decided to check out Xian's old/possibly next neighborhood, Ballard. So was it everything Almost Live built it up to be? Crazy retired Norwegians driving down the center of the road, wipers on, seatbelt dangling out from underneath the door? Actually, it was pretty quiet.

We made it out to Scarecrow video (Of which I must open a franchise in Coquitlam, if only as a service to all of mankind), half price books and a closed cinema books (where I really, really wanted to interrogate the shopkeeper on her method of organization, that I might apply it to my own household). Oh yeah, I found Kikaida, Mariko. Three weeks later.

Dinner consisted of some of the best pizza we'd had in a while at a tiny deserted bar off the main drag. As skeptical as I was while being IDed by an elderly woman who could barely read my passport, they knew EXACTLY how much bread and cheese should go into each pizza. The Irrational and Bean departed to hear the ramblings of one wise sage.

The Old Pequliar was our next destination for beer and pool, where Xian demonstrated some of the finest trick shots I'd ever seen. Hell, I can't even launch a cue ball across the room. The familiar sound of 'Be Aggressive' by Faith No More drew me into the kitchen where I spoke with Dave the cook for a while about Mr. Patton and his recent exploits.

The Animation Show (vol. 2) was our entertainment for the evening, a film festival started by Mike Judge and Don Hertzfeldt, to prove that animators could organize and facilitate such events on their own (yeah, smells like Spike and Mike retribution). I think we all managed to intermittently nap, so between the five of us (Xian, Miyuki, Mariko, Jen and myself) we DID see the whole thing. Here's what I remember:


GUARD DOG
Bill Plympton's latest short about a paranoid dog who perceived every living creature in the park to be a threat to his owner. Many laughs were had, it was reminiscent of the first five minutes of Gozu (Yakuza Attack Dog!).


HELLO
An Aussie short by Jonathan Nix. I thought it was really cute. The story of an analog ghetto box, unable to splice together a message quickly enough to attract the attention of a digital neighbor whom he's falling for. In the end, the gramophone (grandpa) prevails with an old school message of love.


THE MEANING OF LIFE
Don Hertzfeldt's latest short that explores the evolution of mankind, through various stages of hideous mutation. During the modern day segment, we get a hilarious glimpse at social interactions of characters who repeat the same out-of-context phrases over and over.


WARD 13
Another Aussie short by Peter Cornwell, who took years to produce this stop-motion masterpiece. After a car accident leaves a man bandaged from head-to-toe in a hospital ward, he soon realizes that the patients there are undergoing hideous experiments and seeks to escape an inevitable fate. I loved the wheelchair chase scene reminiscent of the last five minutes of 'the wrong trousers'. I'm just such a fanatic when it comes to old school stop motion animation.

So Xian took us under the Aurora Street Bridge to see the Fremont Troll, a piece constructed by four artists in 1990, sporting a hubcap for his left eye and a crushed Volkswagen in his left hand. This is the traditional starting point for Halloween (Trolloween) pub crawls.

Kudos to Xian for playing tour guide and putting up with our 'are we there yet?' moments, of which there were many; however, tongue planted firmly in cheek. Yep, Seattle ranks right up there with Adelaide, Cologne and Malibu for places that just felt like home.

9pm: Ping Pong [2002] -- Incorrectly marketed in the West as the Japanese cousin of "Shaolin Soccer", I'd say this movie is more like a wackier sports themed take on "School of Rock". Funny, exciting and extremely inspirational this is a fabulous film for all ages and even had the jaded Montreal crowd cheering along with the film. Don't miss out on one of the best sports films ever. No really.

Xtra Special D.o.S. Screening This Wednesday

Sorry for the late notice, but I just found out about this myself. This Wednesday (Feb 2/05) at 7:30pm there will be a very special screening at the Den of Sin of "Om Gottes Willen", Nina Hagen's documentary about her spiritual travels through India. There will likely be chanting before or after the screening as well and a special surprise guest (but if you ask really nice I might tell you). Please RSVP so that I know someone is coming. If you can make it I highly recommend it. This will be a night to remember.

7pm: Business is Business [1971] -- Verhoeven's first film to receive distribution in the US this is slice 'o life kind of picture, kind of comedic, kind of dramatic... set in Holland's famous red light district. AKA Diary of a Hooker, AKA Any Special Way. A must see for fans of Verhoeven's early work.

9pm: Turkish Delight [1973] -- An extra yummy Rutger Hauer stars a Dutch sculpter who has a stormy affair with a young girl. Told in flash back it's kinda like a Dutch (read: sexier, less sappy) take on "Love Story".

Next D.o.S. night will be Monday February 21/05. Schedule to follow. Plus, a special weekend edition of the D.o.S. with mystery guest. Maybe. Details to follow.

for those of you who haven't been to the cinerama, it is the COOLEST movie theatre on the planet. paul allen dropped a buttload of money into renovating it. it's even got stars on the ceiling!

'First there was George Romero's classic 1978 zombie movie Dawn of the Dead. Then, last year, came the spoof of the movie, Shaun of the Dead. Now, Romero has a new film in the works, Land of the Dead, in which members of the cast of last year's spoof will be featured, one of the stars of the new movies has disclosed. John Leguizamo, who says he plays "a zombie killer" in the new movie, told the website ComingSoon.net, "I've got my own hypothesis too about [why Romero included the Shaun cast]. ... so, aside from the clubhouse party friday night and eating my favouritist chineefoo ever (no paul, not hon's) with miyuki, my weekend slate is clear.

I'm thinking an encore presentation of life aquatic would be good, since miyuki slept through it the first time. I'd also like to see house of flying daggers. and possibly closer.

I have $80 to last me 48 hours. this should accomodate at LEAST two movies plus drinks plus chineefoo.

so, who is up for what, and when?

I'm thinking a saturday back to back would be sweet. 2pm life aquatic, followed by a 4:35pm flying daggers, with bubbletea inbetwixt, at tinseltown? there's an earlier option of noon and 2:30, but who wants to think about that? you can still taste the toothpaste...

'sides, I'm hoping for chineefoo saturday for lunch...

K so here's the plan....

It's me birthday on Jan. 5, this is Nicholas by the way, and I am intending to go out for laser tag or some other similar event and then to the Lotus for dancing to a ton of dj's who mess with all tunes modern and retro in weird and fun ways. This is a Wednesday night, cover is $4 , coat check $2 and drinks are $3.50. I don't know how much laser tag is, friends are looking into it for me, but I am looking for something fun for a night, then dancing. There are usually between 4 and 12 dj's there taking turns spinning for the night so there should be something for anyone.

I am also trying to put together a more relaxed and talkatively social event for the weekend, either Friday or Saturday, but I have not found a venue yet. Rachael and Bob suggested the crepe place on Granville St near the capitol 6, but I have been told the drinks are not the cheapest. I will be looking into getting reduced rates and such but I am not sure yet. If anyone has suggestion for either night or both let me know. I really want to go dancing on my birthday and still have the chance to drink and socialize with my friends. I like the weekend because most people can make it, anyone who knows me is invited and I will stress that I really do not want anything from anyone in the way of gifts. I say this because I have had people not show up because they could not get me something, which is total bunk as I really only want to see people that I care about.

one problem, I can't find where (or if) it is showing in vancouver. something about canadian movie listings sucking so much ass when it comes to predicting showtimes for the following week (you guys all know canada has weaknesses, this is its biggest).

can someone please confirm for me where and when I can be viewing this finest of films? and perhaps accompany the li'l woman and I for a group outing? and early afternoon showing on the 25th would be swell.

and no, it isn't weird to go to the movies on dec 25. I do it every year. I can only handle so much family time, and movie theatres are always open.

ZULA is back in town!

Man, this is some of the best news I've heard all month...my friend Cem, concert promoter and proprietor of Zula productions, is back from Turkey and is opening a new restaurant/venue on Commercial - RIME. Cem has brought legends such as John Zorn, Dave Douglas and Junk Genius to Vancouver and has done so much for the scene that would otherwise only exist during the du maurier jazz fest.

Check it out, I will certainly be visiting on a regular basis!

Hey Kids,

I know you've already marked your calendars in red, but just in case you haven't I'm issuing a big fat reminder that the second annual D.o.S. Xmas Massacre happens this Saturday (Dec 18). We'll be staring around 7pm, but if you can't make it 'till later don't worry just get here when you can 'cause we want a BIG turnout this year. As usal there will be games, movies, surprises and food (!) Also as usual it's B.Y.O.B. and you'll probably want to because I finally got ahold of what was supposed to be last year's surprise (props to Alex for helping us out). I offer a taste for those not convinced of their obligation to attend.

Also remember to bring a small (no more than $5), wrapped gift for the Greedy Santa Gift Exchange. Make something, re-gift, bring something you found on the way, just make sure it's wrapped so no one knows what it is. Points are awarded for humour value (we may even institue a special prize for whoever brings the best present). Last year's "high"lights include a can holder shapped like a curvy woman in daisy-dukes, an issue of Heavy Metal from 1981 and several pieces of junk culled from BJ's desk in the office. Birthday/Chirstmas party

As it is now officially my birthday and I just finished my last assignment and can actually think about these things, I thought I'd get off my ass and organize some way to celebrate. I was thinking about hosting a gingerbread house making night at my place. I'll provide snacks and apple cider and gingerbread if everyone that comes could bring some sort of candy to decorate with that way we have a variety. It will be next tuesday the 21st sometime in the evening. RSVP

RETURN OF THE KING: EXTENDED EDITION THIS SUNDAY!

One of the advantages of working at a video store is getting my dvds a few days before the rest of you suckers can get your hands on them. Oh those five days between thursday, when the shipment arrives, and tuesday, when they're released on the shelf, are pretty damn sweet. It makes me feel like a God. Well this weekend we get our copies of Return of the King: EE and dammit I'm watching it this Sunday and all those who want to see it please come.

We'll be starting at SIX FIFTEEN pm sharp (or when Owen shows up because he's awesome and you're not). Come any later, we will not open the door. This is a one time thing with the snobbery but I don't want to keep stopping and starting the movie all night.

Quiet Decemberween

It's a busy time, but we promised everyone a Decemberween. All night are pretty much taken before Christmas except for December 17. I know there "might" be another event the next night, so if you've got plans already for the 18th and aren't down for two nights of partying, do go to the one the next night.

Decemberween is kind of being thrown together and in a quiet, no-pressure sort of gathering. If it's super quiet, board & video games will get pulled out. Otherwise, normal drinking and socializing which you should all know the drill by now.
