Dear Mr. Spielberg,
We, the undersigned, wish to inform you that we are compelled to boycott your movie ?War of the Worlds?. Our decision is based solely on the abhorrent behavior of Mr. Tom Cruise. We will not be spending our good money to support the ridiculous and potentially dangerous antics of this raving narcissist. Mr. Cruise?s actions and comments have been offensive and insulting when not downright laughable.
-We do not want to hear Mr. Cruise?s uneducated and unsubstantiated opinions on medicine and Psychiatry. His mean-spirited decision to use Brooke Shields as an example was unforgivable. The potential impact on those in need of treatment, who might heed the advice of a ?celebrity? over a trained professional, is dangerous. If Mr. Cruise believes that vitamins can cure mental illness, then perhaps he should consider increasing his dosage.
-We do not want to be enlightened about Mr. Cruise's ?religion? of Scientology. If he is so concerned about mind control, he should not be part of an organization that seems to use this tactic as its Modus Operandi. Mr. Spielberg, was the fully staffed Scientology tent you allowed Mr. Cruise to have on the movie set placed right next to the Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, and Muslim tents? Didn?t think so.
-We are sick of being force-fed his relationship with Katie Holmes which, if it isn?t the publicity hoax it appears to be, is a pathetic, juvenile, attention mongering display. Tom?s obvious control of his Stepford-Wife-To-Be is frightening.
-We do not want to watch his ?out of control? yet suspiciously manipulative antics nor listen to his condescending, holier-than-thou judgments. This man cannot even articulate a coherent sentence. He should stick to reading movie scripts.
It is revealing that the most compelling character Tom Cruise has ever portrayed is ?Frank TJ Mackay? from Magnolia, a control-freak with a pathological need to assert his obsession over not just those around him, but the public as well, by exploiting his access to public media. Apparently Mr. Cruise was playing himself.
Perhaps he views the aliens he battles in War of the worlds as a metaphor for the aliens he and his Scientology friends believe inhabit we humans. Relax Tom, it?s just a movie. A movie we will not be paying to see.

Hey kids!
Veterans' Club on 23rd and Main at 7:30pm.
Upside: Best selection of songs and cheap drinks ($1.50 beer or $2.50 for a bottle of Pilsner). Crowd is bizarre: indie chic hipster and thinning haired old ladies mixed with greasey guidos and dirty old men.
Downside: Not a lot of opportunity to sing. Competition is stiff (some great singers). Wednesday nights. Must arrive early to get a shot at singing.
Anyhoo, let me know if you're down with the singing.

nightmarket?
miyuki and I have heard tell of another excursion to the nightmarket this saturday... we were planning to attend. is anyone else going?
I have three seats available in my car for those who don't mind being very close to their neighbours. in exchange for transportation, birthday trinkets would be nice... I'd prefer to give at least one of the seats to someone who knows where the hell they're going, too. I don't know richmond from paul's ass, which is to say I'm vaguely familiar but don't know any specifics.
this is all contingent on me not meeting my imminent demise attempting the grouse grind earlier in the day, of course.

7pm: Matango: Attack of the Mushroom People [1963] -- From the same director and studio as "Godzilla", this surprisingly atmospheric movie deals with a shipwreck on a mysterious island where the only thing to eat is slowly eating them...
9pm: The Mysterians [1957] -- Same director as Matango, this one deals with an alien invasion and giant robots!
Tuesday June 14 (because we're going to see Batman Begins on Monday) -- Kickass Dudes
7pm:Zatoichi [1962] -- The original blind, masseur / swordsman.
9pm: Hanzo the Razor [1972] -- From the same director as the Lone Wolf and Cub series and featuring Zatoichi himself, Shintarô Katsu, Hanzo is a sort of Samurai detective who rights wrongs and punishes bad guys. Oh, and he also "interrogates" women by raping them with his giant cock that he "strengthens" by pounding with hammer (but don't worry, the girls all end up loving it). Thoroughly unPC, but thoroughly entertaining.

9pm: Medium Cool [1969] - Verite style pic about a womanizing TV cameraman (Robert Forester at his sexy best) who becomes unwittingly involved in the turbulent counter-culture scene. Notable for using actual footage of the riots during the 1968 Democratic convention and for receiving an X rating when originally released (don't ask me why because I've seen it and I couldn't tell you).

7pm: Cat Ballou [1965] - Western musical starring Jane Fonda, Lee Marvin and Nat King Cole. One of my all time favourites.
9pm: My Name Is Nobody [1973] - Compelling comedy that also functions as a great satire of Westerns (particularly the Spaghetti kind). A young, energetic gun fighter (Terence Hill) competes with an old gunfighter (Henry Fonda) who just wants to retire. A must for Western fans.

I just saw in the straight that Hayao Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle" opens in theaters on June 10th!!! We all need to be there and howl every time the castle grows legs and walks around (no, let's not do that). I guess the options would be a matinee or perhaps one evening the following weekend...

I've put it on both those days because of a rumoured other party. And since the host/ess has gone to bed (probably), I just wanted to say whatever night is not being occupied by a party will be karaoke night (I would like to see it on the 11th, ideally as I will have my little brother, probably).
I went out with Trevor (of T-Rev, Halloween fame) tonight to the Marble Arch's Karaoke lounge.
So, who wants Radiohead (Alex?), Nirvana, Judas Priest, The Smiths (only one song, Mariko, but they have a Morrissey song, too!), Slipknot, Helloween, Coldplay (I'm looking at you, Christian) or Iron Maiden? This place has a huge variety (no Modest Mouse, but I get the impression that when it gets released, they'll have it) and it's hourly room rates. They have a digital remote that loads up your track onto the screens and the videos that accompany are brilliant.
I want to keep the numbers for the rooms under 10 per room as we had a dozen and it was a bit too competitive for the mic. If you're interested you'll need to RSVP the comments (and which day you'd be able to make it).

Alright everyone, it's time to do some forward flips in anticipation of the only exciting thing that ever happens in Richmond:

b) how many can contribute seats in a car?
We can always meet at someone's place (in east van) and take the 98 into richmond and find our way to Ikea via the website...or with a few cars (I have 3-4 seats available) we can drive to Ikea, park and walk the 3 blocks.
What to expect there for newbies: lots of snacks (including the signature chicken eggs by sam and dragon's beard candy), desserts, cell accessories, rides, maybe a crappy band, car accessories, knock-off transformers, toys, cheap scandals, jewelry, prints, shirts, asian dvds, PC accessories galore, karaoke dvds/vcds and the RCMP in search of episode 3 dvds.
