Stepping up...

Since nobody's actually made any decisions about movies, or even offered any opinions beyond Scott and Christian's entertaining exchanges of epithets, I'm taking the law into my own hands. I spent most of yesterday sleeping off my anaesthetic haze, and today I got almost all of my July pay all at once. So I'm feeling both well-rested and financially secure (until I hit Ikea this weekend) and will definitely be hitting the flicks tonight.

Harold and Kumar plays at 7:30 at the Capitol 6, the Manchurian Candidate at 7:00. I'm for either of these or could go, in an extraordinary display of fortitude and daring, for a double bill!!! H&K at 7:30, Manchurian at 10:00...

Of course, it could be that nobody else had as much sleep as I did last night and doesn't feel so inclined to saturate themselves with movies this weekend...

That's the coolest damn thing...

John Kerry's speech is being simulcast in Arabic on Al-Arabiya...

Somehow I'm very impressed by this. Makes a good precedent...

Update: Al Jazeera too...

Regarding "Harold & Kumar"

Wanted to bring you attention to this.

Movie weekend...

Any way I look at it, this seems like it'll be a three movie weekend...

I'm the only person alive, apparently, who really enjoyed all three of M. Night Shyamalan's (I hoped I spelled that right) movies, so I'm determined to see The Village. Advance press is actually pretty good.

The Manchurian Candidate's been getting damn good reviews, and I love a good political thriller, especially these damn days. Shamefully, I've never seen the original, and for some reason I feel compelled to see the new one first.

Oddly, I think I may be most stoked about Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. What's up with this one? Ads are suggesting stoner gross-out teenagers-trying-to-get-fucked-in-every-possible-meaning-of-the-word comedy, but between the lines there seems to be a genuine riff on American racial politics.

Anyways, I'm thinking of catching one tomorrow evening, and at least one more early Saturday before the fireworks. Any preferences for what comes first?

PS: Fable of the day - I'm so full of (largely ineffective) xylocaine that my right eye and ear are numb. Drawing on my new experience with emergency dental work, I'd advise others not to floss so insistently that they rip out a chunk of a tooth. Better yet: Never Floss.

Update: Bugger. I forgot all about Garden State... maybe a four-movie weekend.

You guys want to come over and play?

August 21st. It's a Saturday.

Let's say 8pmish.

I'm going to saran-wrap my bed, just in case Bob follows through on his threats

The fireworks are about the niftiest thing that happens in Vancouver in the summer, more for the crowds than anything else, so I'm hosting a simple drunken fireworks dealie at my place on Saturday August 7th. Any start time is good.

You can't see the fireworks from my balcony, but I'm a few minutes walk away from English Bay. I'm thinking we coalesce at my place, begin drinking, visit the madding crowds and seizure-inducing pyrotechnics, and resume our drunken idiocy (either at the beach or back at my place)...

I'm at 1424 Nelson (near Broughton), apartment 1904. I'll post an update as that weekend nears...

It's a precious first chance for Bob and Christian to do foul, reprehensible things to my living space. And it'll finally force me to buy the rest of my furniture and stop using a subwoofer as a coffee table.

Tomorrow Night at the D.o.S.

Hey Kids!!

We're back (for real now) and we're rested and we've got photos to show you! So come by our place tomorrow at 7pm for more Meiko Kaji (a.k.a. Female Convict Scorpion).

7pm: Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion [1972] -- The first of the FCS films, wherein we find out why Scorpion is in prison, why she is called "Scorpion" and why she kicks so much ass!

9pm: Female Slave Ship -- It doesn't even really matter what it's about, it's a Japanese exploitation movie with women in chains riding the high seas and.... Pirates!!!! Yes, you read that right! Special prize awarded for whoever can keep track of how many times the upper hand changes hands (seriously, seriously convoluted).

RSVP if you can (especially since we're getting back into the swing of things, a handle on numbers would be good), bring money for the pop fund and let me know if you want something other than Pepsi.

See you there,

~meeko

Happy Birthday to Us

Bob and I are holding our B-Day celebrations on Friday, August 13th.
BYOB and I am expecting lots of expensive presents.

Everyone must see...

A documentary called Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism. Easily one of the most enlightening docos I've seen. Sure everyone knows that FOX is biassed, but I was never aware how biassed. So depressing, but the call to action at the end is empowering. I highly recommend it. The part about Jeremy Glick is particularly funny and disturbing. I have it in Mpeg format (it's too big to burn a VCD of, and I'm too lazy to split it) if anyone wants a copy for their computer or whatever. It's also available for speedy download via Bit Torrent at Suprnova.org or order at Amazon.

Show Review: The Killaz

So as previously mentioned I went to the Killas show on Wednesday with my friends Jym and Andrea. It was at the Marine club, an unlikely venue for such a gig in my opinion as it is really small, and old-bar-like. Not to mention really fricken hot!. We got there just as they set up and the bartender/manager of the establishment had really no clue as to what was going on. As such we did not get out dollar discount for wearing a piece of camo. (Later people did, once the promoter finished arguing with the guy.)

The first band to hit the stage was a band from Campbell River called P.U.C.K. (which stands for Previously Unknown Canadian Kids. With the exception of the beat-maker (or the player of the Roland MC505) this was perhaps the whitest hiphop band in the world. They were Canadian themed (Puck, get it!) and most of their songs referenced such wonderful Canadiana as Beer and Weed. (The refernces to the tri-city area were particualrly painful.) This band were awful. The only thing they had going for them were the occasional Slayer licks from the guitarist (as well as the occasional smirks he gave his fellow band members.) The beats were dull and the choruses were among the worst performances I have ever heard, usually consisting of manipulating a old kid's rhyme into something about weed, how the police suck, or being drunk. (One example "If you take my scotch/I'll kick your crotch/Bee Eye Eee Eye Atch.") They also used Peter Cetera's Glory of Love in one chorus changing all of the words to glorify smoking weed ("Glory of Bud") which I imagine is only funny while high. This was such a painful thing to watch that I was in tears from laughing at them so hard. Whenever I have to fill out a survey which asks "What is your most embarassing moment?" I will say watching this band because I was so embarassed for them.

The second band Fans of Nothing took a long time to set up. When they got to the stage they proved to be almost as painful as the first band. But thankfully they seemed t break up before the end of their set. (Their first and Last show.) The drummer walked off stage with a mic and started saying how they never practiced and and that this was his last show. The singer continued to mumble improvised words at random. Eventually the drummer went back behind the kit and played for a bit more until the guitarist finally gave up and said goodbye, walking off the stage, followed by the drummer. This left the singer standing alone with some pre-recorded consolidated-like beats playing from his CD player. He chanted some kind of comment for awhile until he finally left the stage as well.

The Killas came on the Stage: Stace, Destro, Billy (Cobra Commander's son, since Cobra Commander and the band had parted ways), and two vipers. All were fully strapped with their laser guns which apparantly we were supposed to have brought as well; I was unaware. They played through a set of new and old material and rocked the house pretty well. I was laughing and head-nodding pretty much the whole time. The brought out some Cobra Bux for the crowd, and played some old faves like "Cobra Wants You" and "Eau De Cobra" but didn't play "Arashikage Ninja" much to my dismay. Stace' displayed the strength of her singing voice and a moderate rapping ability, while Destro kept the energy level up with some good ryhme skills. Billy was their DJ, setting up all the beats on the laptop they had brought. (Why couldn't they just have put the Cobra Commander hood on him and no one would have been the wiser?") The two vipers just danced and waved their guns around, like really white S1Ws. (The male viper was the most awkward dancer in the whole frickin world; he danced like a grade 7 boy.) The show was fun, if only the opening bands were a little better and the Marine Club wasn't so hot!

Anybody into Illuminares on Saturday?

Google loves us all...

Be they hackers, or simply socially conscious techs at Google, I have to salute those responsible for something I discovered moments ago.

Google the phrase "worst president ever", and the #1 hit is Dubya's official White House bio - even though neither the phrase nor the words "worst" or "ever" appear anywhere on the page.

This fills me with appreciation for the ketchup of freedom. Even Corinne telling me that everyone else knew about this months ago won't wipe the smile off my face.

The Band Previously Known As...

The GiJoe Killas is now called just the Killas (Those Harbro fucks) and is playing tonight at the Marine Club.

For those not in the know, The Killas are Cobra Commander, Destro and the Baroness and all of their 'laser-raps' are about Cobra and their diabolical machinations bent on destroying all things Joe.

The Georgia Straight says: " Politically minded singer-rapper from Toronto, with guests Fans of Nothing, P.U.C.K., and DJs Carter Hayes and Jim Rebel. July 21, Marine Club (573 Homer). Tix $5 at the door, Doors at 8pm"

hahah.  Political minded is the PC way of saying bent on world domination!    It's also a dollar cheaper if you wear an article of Camo.   I've heard thatthey drag a Joe on stage and kill him during their set.   Come one come all.   I'll be there around 8-9 or so.   Join the Cobra Elite while you can, or else suffer the fate that awaits those who won't see the light.

COOOOOOOOOBRAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Start time 7pm-ish. All the usual applies...

Jon Stewart is The Man

Disturingly realistic American election scenarios.

This is gonna get me banned...

For Corinne...

What does the "W" stand for (he asks rhetorically)...

It took me a minute to realize this wasn't a joke.

It's getting harder to maintain my faith in the essential sanity of most Americans.

Happy Trails

Today I had a third interview with Norco, and starting Monday I'll be employed there as a graphic artist! I'll be working on things like ads, catalogues, flyers, brochures...possibly even the designs that go on the bikes. Pretty damn pleased about that, so far.

Movie Nights?

Any word about tomorrow night?

Umm, wow...

I know we've beaten this horse to death and beyond, but this is a solid rundown of the worst distortions and factual errors of Fahrenheit 9/11, with links to many more examples.

It's a bit disturbing.

Zero-G pants-wetting, or, How I learned to stop worrying and ask someone to push me out of a plane...

Now that I'm getting settled in and have some free time, I'm obeying the prods of a fellow intern and thinking of going skydiving sometime soon. Only problem is, I'm a wuss, too fragile to do it alone. Anybody wanna jump out of a plane with me?

Vital info: The jump we'd be doing (being parachute virgins) is a 3000-foot tethered jump, which I'm told is the standard first drop. Step from the plane, freefall for perhaps a second before your chute automatically opens, and drift downwards. Costs about $200 (depending on the place), so I'll be saving my pennies for a little while before I'm up for it. The fields are mostly in Abbotsford, so fellow jumpers with car are especially welcome. A handful of my coworkers did it in May, said it was a fucking blast, and have been preaching skydiving to me ever since. Anybody interested?

Argh...

Politicians are a pain in my flabby, lumpy, fishbelly-white, patchily-hairy, oddly-placed, but otherwise beautiful ass.

Sugestions Welcome

Because people can't go a tuesday with out a Den of Sin movie night, I have agreed to continue them in B.J. and Mariko's absence. However I'm fresh out of ideas as to what movies to program. This is your opportunity to contribute to the programming. So please feel free to tell me what to show on tuesday, i'll post my decision on monday night.

Best. Music Video. Ever.

I had some trouble getting the video and audio to synch up properly, but somehow I think it managed to make this better. As if that was possible.
