My Birthday

As an excuse to get free drinks, I will be going out on Saturday for drinks. All friends of mine are welcome to join me. Location and Time TBA, but I'm thinking we could really take over the Vet's hall. I know some people might be uncomfortable there, but drinks are cheap, and it's waaaay quieter on Saturdays.

Suggestions or concerns can be emailed to me or posted in the comments.

Movie night cancelled... NO MORE!

Remember how awesome Underworld was? No? Good, 'cuz we're watching it again at the Clubhouse this coming Monday, January 30th.

Why? Because afterward, we're going to go out and watch Underworld 2.

Why watch both? Because Underworld 2 is destined to be so bad, that we need time to get drunk beforehand. Underworld should provide ample time and motivation to get drunk enough to ruin the movie for all the normal moviegoers out there, who are foolish enough to go and see Underworld 2 wherever we end up.

Of course, planning this event caused me to be so indebted to Meeko that I promised to go and see Bloodrayne with her when it finall comes out, so if you can't make this one, you can always come to see Uwe Boll's latest videogame-inspired masterpiece with her and I (I have no false hopes that anyone besides she and I attending, so don't feel bad).

Corinne will post the meeting thime in the comments of this posting. Hope to see you there, until I get blind drunk that is (on a school night no less!).

Due to a variety of reasons, there will be no movie night this week (Jan 30).

However, Superhero Night will still be happening on Jan 27th. Hope to see you there.

Housewarming Reminder

Just wanted to remind everyone of the housewarming tonight, anytime after 7pm. Food, games, bit 'o karaoke and a tour o' the new place.

Two things:
- skytrain to joyce or park alongside the london drugs mall off kingsway...parking is an issue.
- Use the "#" and "*" keys at the front door to find "Mike" and that will dial my cell.

Address and phone are in the forum.

Thanks!

High School Massacre

7pm: Zero Day (2003): If you only make it to one movie this week, make it to this one. Easily one of the most underrated films of 2003, Zero Day is a master work in making one's budget work for the movie and providing an emotionally devastating portrait of how things can go terribly, terribly wrong. Fuck Gus Van Sant, this is the honest exploration of highschool tragedy.

9pm: Duck! The Carbine School Massacre (2000): Mere months after the events at Columbine High School, a couple of guys named Hellfire & Smack (oh yeah) decided to make a splatter tribute on High8 video. Tasteless, grisly fun or cinematic abomination? You be the judge.

Pop fund & RSVP (although you never do).

Luv,

~meeko

For Mariko

This is amazing. Sond kinda sucks, and the video is a bit fuzzy. But this is a clip from an 1983 James Brown concert. He calls up Michael Jackon from the audience, and MJ does a litlle bit of his thang. MJ then tells JB that Prince is in the audience, and he's called up.......holy fuck this is awesome. Prince takes over!

One More More Time? (Un Autre Autre Fois?)

Event: House Party
Excuse: a random birthday
Date: 28th Jan.
Place: Slack Shack
Mission: introduce Maria's french friend Susanne and her french BF to massive numbers of people that don't speak their language and all get smashed off our asses...
Moral: meeting new Quebecois people and getting them drunk is a good way to learn naughty words for use abroad

Even more of that Denny Sin goodness.

Howdy strangers and secret lovers. Just thought y'all might want to know what's happening at the Den of Sin this first month of the new year.

Jan. 9
Underrated Horror Sequel Night

Or so Rue Morgue would have me believe in a top 100 overlooked movies list.

7pm Amityville Horror II: The Possession (1982): What Rue Morgue said, " Sorely overlooked upon release as yet another case of sequelitis, "The Possession" actually ages a lot better than the original "Amityville Horror" with its story of domestic tragedy and ghostly first-person camera work". Well let's hope so. I certainly don't want to regret not taking Sinister Sam's suggestion that we'd be better off with Amityville Horror 3-D, sans the 3-D of course.

9pm Exorcist III (1990): I remember seeing this when I was 10 and having the shit spooked out of me. William Peter Blatty (who wrote the original Exorcist novel) adapted his other demon possession novel "Legion". It was then decided to add an exorcism scene at the end and voila! You have an Exorcist sequel. Either way let's hope my 10 year old self had some taste or we're traveling back in time to kick his (my?) ass and maybe hopping a bit forward to get it on with younger versions of our significant others or ex-significant others.

Jan. 16
Nazis and the Babes Who Love Them

7pm Night Porter (1974): I really like this IMDB user comment, "Walking a fine line between compelling drama and utter sleaze, THE NIGHT PORTER is one of those films you're going to react to strongly. Dirk Bogarde gives one of his creepiest performances as the title character, a post-war Nazi-in-hiding who stumbles across a camp survivor he had an uber-yucky ongoing tryst with. Charlotte Rampling is pretty good as his paramour, but it's the supporting cast of Nazis in denial that make this Italian film a sleazoid classic. It also kicked inspired one of the most brazen and despised subgenres of Italian filmmaking, the Nazi sexploitation film. Whatever you think of it, THE NIGHT PORTER is certainly far more tasteful than anything that followed it!" Hey maybe we watch some of those sleazy Italian movies...hey wait look at this.

9pm Salon Kitty (1976): This will be our first Tinto Brass movie we've seen (We suck, we know but we're cute!). This about a brothel enjoyed by many a Nazi. There may be a plot involving recording the Nazis getting it on (meaning "bizarre passions and carnal degradations") with the ladies for blackmail purposes. But hey there's "Bizarre passions and carnal degradations". Sadly we don't know about programming more Tinto Brass movie for fear of tripping over people's boners while heading to the washroom.

Jan. 23
High School Massacre

7pm Zero Day (2003): Like Gus Van Sant's "Elephant" a movie that tries to understand what might lead two boys to march into their school and blow away a few of their classmates. Unlike the Columbine Killers the two boys here are presented as normal well-adjusted teens with loving families. Filmed as a video journal as the teens plan their massacre and explain their motives. The families of these boys were played by their real families adding an authenticity to the film. You might want to read this article by the filmmaker after a fan of the film got...inspired.

9pm Duck! The Carbine School Massacre (2000): The first post-Columbine exploitation movie shot on cheap ass Hi-8 video! Watch our heroes Hellfire and Smack lay down their fury on their classmates! Righteous fury!

Jan. 30
Early Miike

7pm Shinjuku Triad society (1995): Miike's theatrical debut after many straight to video features. There's yakuza violence and taboos broken. Fun to be had by all.

9pm Fudoh: The New Generation (1996): Fudoh doesn't like his yakuza boss Dad, especially after seeing him kill Fudoh's brother. So it's all out war between Father and Son! It's Miike that should be enough explanation for you.

That's almost it for this month. Stay tuned.

For those interested...

I don't post often to my blog, so I thought I'd let people know I've posted my top 50 albums of 2005.

Housewarming

How does Saturday, January 21st sound for a housewarming?

Address is in the forum (where to find duke).
Details will follow.

SECRET ORDER OF CHIEFS

Secret Chief's 3 and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
(with Bend Sinister)
Live at Richards on Richards, Sunday January 8th, 2006
Doors 8:00pm -- Tickets are $16 at Zulu, Scratch and Red Cat.

www.secretchiefs3.com
www.sleepytimegorillamuseum.com

I have four interested people so far...this is basically the warped minds behind Mr. Bungle...only without Mike Patton. I think you'll find SC3 to be an arabic synth trio that has gradually evolved into an eastern-influenced percussive ensemble featuring Montreal violinist Eyvind Kang.

I have all their albums and a live dvd if anyone cares for a sampling.

You should see this, really.

Back to the Mekong

Kate and I will be hitting the Mekong on the 30th, around about 7pm or so, followed by whatever. We'd love to have some company, because we're terribly lonely people.

Though I'm sure everyone else is already sick of the movie, we'll also probably (and finally) be seeing Harry Potter earlier that day.

noo yeerz

well, since no one else has stepped up to the plate w/ a new years plan, i figured we might as well make use of my brand new xmas present: a raclette/fondue set!!! if you don't know what raclette is, it's kinda like fondue, only instead of a pot, there's little dishes for cheese & a grill surface for your meats & veggies. you grill your meats or veggies on the grill plate and then use them to scrap up the bubbly cheese. delicious!

we figure we'll get started around 8pm, and everyone who wants to come can volunteer to bring a cheese, a meat/seafood, or veggies of their choosing. i'll provide a little bit of everything & fruit and chocolate fondue. the set itself is for 8 people, but there'll be other munchies and we can all take turns. there will probably also be card/board games & (obviously) some kind of movie. if other people have fondue sets they want to bring that's cool too.

rsvp in the comments & mention if you are bringing cheese/meat/seafood/veggies. oh, and byob.

hope to see you there.

holiday loot.

so amongst my xmas loot, I seem to have received two copies of 3-iron on dvd. great movie, but not something I'll need two of. it's gonna be a pain in the ass to return it to amazon (where it actually came from) and I don't know if I could return it to best buy without a receipt...

so, would anyone like this in exchange for another dvd? branch new, still in the plastic wrap, US packaging too. was hoping to exchange it for a copy of old boy (keep it in korean cinema, at least) but I'm not overly picky.

it's also somewhat amusing how out of touch my mother is... I mentioned wanting "hitchhiker's guide" on dvd... she got the bbc series. I didn't even know it was OUT on dvd. leave it to her to completely miss the somewhat large release of a current movie and opt for the obscure, twenty-five year old british miniseries...

In which I demonstrate how out of touch I am...

Finally saw Serenity. In English.

Had the choice of either renting it for 2 dollars or buying it for 40. I rented it.

Shoulda just bought the damn thing. Good odds I´ll watch it 19 more times anyways.

Birthday plans

As some of you may already know my birthday is on wednesday. To celebrate I was going to head down to the vetrans club on Main street(at corner of 24th) for karaoke after i get off work. You are all invited to come for a skate before hand at Riley Park Community Centre(30th and ontario) from 7 till whenever we feel like leaving. The first 45 minutes of the public is a cosom hockey session which means it's just stick and puck hockey with plastic sticks. If you want to come for a skate i'd recomend coming a bit before 7 and i may be able to get you free rentals(maybe).

I plan on being at the vetrans club around 8:30 so if you don't feel like skating i'll just meet you there. After karaoke I was thinking of going to Lotus for some dancing, probably sometime around 10:30 or 11. I'd love for you all to join me.

Call to all Narnians

There was some discussion last Saturday of going to a Sunday Matinee of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe after the Swank Christmas Party. Can we solidify this with a time and place?

Movie Nights Back on Track

Hey Kids,

I'm slightly less contagious now, so y'all are welcome back at my house!

The schedule:
Monday December 12/05: Verhoeven Night Part II
(Consider it an early Xmas Present)

7pm: Katie Tipppel [1975] -- Monique van de Ven (Turkish Delight) sleeps her way to the top as a poor girl forced into prostitution in turn of the century Holland. With a young & yummy Rutger Hauer (of course).

9pm: Soldier of Orange [1977] -- Verhoeven has described this as his favourite movie he's made & it's still considered a classic of Dutch cinema. Rutger Hauer stars as a college boy who joins the Dutch resistence with his friends during WWII for a "spot of adventure".

Also, don't forget that Friday (December 16th!!) is the 3rd Annual Xmassacre being held at Blim (197 E. 17th @ Main). Doors open at 7pm & remember to bring a wrapped "gift" for the Crappy Santa Gift Exchange. Afterparty at the Den starting around 11pm.

And last but not least, some of you may be aware that I've been chosen as a finalist in the CBC radio Definitely Not the Opera new film critic contest. Well, it turns out the judging is at least partially going to be done by the public. Please tune in this Saturday December 10 (tomorrow) between 3pm & 4pm to hear my review of "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe", then call or email and tell Sook-yin to give me the job.

I guess that's all. Hope to see you soon.

Hot Karaoke Gossip

I didn't hear anything AT ALL about this tonight, but I just checked online and found "our" Vancouver Courier article.

Thankfully, even though I was the most interviewed out of anyone in our group, I wasn't made to sound like a tool. In fact, I didn't sound like anything. B^)

In other news: when I was there tonight, Vincent and Steven B showed me what we called "The Prototype": a NEW good book with plenty of new songs. It was cleanly laid out, with two columns of songs down each page. It was so new that Ron expressly let Vincent and our table look at it and asked us not to share with anyone. Then, Darlene confiscated it. While I could recognize lots of songs from 2005, there wasn't a whole lot that I'd choose to sing, but it was still nice to look at anyway. One odd inclusion was a B-side from Franz Ferdinand.

And there's a bouncer at the door now, checking ID.

D.o.S. Schedule for December

Here it is kids, the December line up:

Monday Dec 5/05: Verhoeven Night Part 3

7pm: Katie Tippel [1975] -- Poor girl Keetje works her way up the social ladder from prostitute to the wife of a wealthy socialist in turn of the century Holland. Starring Monique van de Ven (Turkish Delight) & Rutger Hauer.

9pm: Soldier of Orange [1977] -- A group of middle-class college boys join the Dutch Resistance during World War II looking for an adventure. Featuring Rutger Hauer at his rugged best.

Monday Dec 12/05: Mech-Attack

7pm: Robot Jox [1990] -- Another one of those lost action classics from the early nineties. While not quite up there with "Robocop 2", it is directed by Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) and it features a Jeffrey Combs cameo. And giant mech-robots!!!!

9pm: Returner [2002] -- You've seen the trailer, now see the movie. Fairly standard Japanese Sci-Fi with lots of CG and of course, giant robots.

Friday Dec 16/05: 3rd Annual Xmassacre!!!
At Blim (17th @ Main). Door 7pm, Film at 8pm. Tell your friends!!!

Monday Dec 19/05: Horror Sequels Worth Another Look

7pm: The Amityville II: The Possession [1982] -- More of a prequel than a sequel, The Possession deals with the house's previous tenants and the evil spirits that possessed the son and led him to kill his family.
9pm: The Exorcist III [1990] -- Directed by William Blatty (who wrote the screenplay for original Exorcist as well as the novel), from his novel "Legion". Sadly, the studio was expecting more of a straight-up sequel & tacked on an exorcism in the final moments of the film causing some serious continuity issues.

Moving Day: December 10th

Hey I'm moving! East Vancouver bound...wondering if anyone would be available to help loading/unloading the van. I think it will go a lot smoother than last year, as I'm bringing boxes each day to work for temporary storage in my office. Mostly furniture left.

If you're available, I was hoping to pick up the truck by 7:30-8:00am and get started loading by 9:00am. I'll treat you to 'house of dosa' or something cool in the new neighborhood.

This Sat.

I know at least four of us are going to the Main Street local to sing our little hearts out this Saturday..
Join us for dinner first too..
Umm.. Call Bob for details..
(That'll work right??)

Any new "must see" Slack Shack shots out there..
Actually boring ones would be ok too...

Cat Sitter Needed

I was wondering if one of you was responsible enough to sit on my cats? This would be for four days, and would require you to feed them and love them, while I am in LA from Dec 7th to the 10th. Patroclus and Ajax would love you for it. If you are interested please contact me. If you don't have my new contact info it is on the forum.

I'm asking Santa and the Hanukkah Rhino for the following:

I spent so much effort on this, that I thought I would share!

And to make this more a community effort, it's time to list off your wishes for this holiday gift giving season!

(P.S. I really want the 20 volume OED, so pool your monies kids!)

Yes, There is a Movie Night Tomorrow

Hey kids, sorry for the late notice. Just wanted to remind you that there will be movies tomorrow (Monday Nov. 28th).

Maniac Night:

7pm: Maniac [1980] -- Classic of the stalk & slash genre.

9pm: Oily Maniac [1976] -- Bizarre, incredibly sleazy Shaw Brothers movie with a rubber slime monster. Has to be seen to be believed.

Pop fund, RSVP, blah, blah, blah.

See you tomorrow.

p.s. Don't forget, this year's Xmassacre is on Dec 16th at Blim (Main & 17th)!!!

Decemberween IV: THE REVENGE!

HEY GUYS! WANT TO COME TO A SWANK PARTY!?

Alright then!

Let's have a party at the Clubhouse on December 10th! At around 8pm!

This is the party where you are to bring 1 (one) item that you have had a hand in creating (either a CD where you're the musician, a craft you've thrown together with some glue, or any other form of expressed creativity). If you have any doubts about what is or is not acceptable, you can reach me via the normal lines of communication.

Hooray for holidays!

D.o.S. Reminder: NOT FOR EVERYONE!!!

Hi Kids,

Sorry this is a little later than usual. I've been hella busy. Just wanted to drop you a line to remind you that this week is Rape Revenge night, and if you are bothered by graphic sexual violence to women (& men) DO NOT COME. We will not hold it against you & would rather you feel safe and happy than hang out with us. But for those who can handle it, the schedule is:

Monday (tomorrow) Nov 21

7pm: Spit on Your Grave (a.k.a. Day of the Woman) [1978] -- The "classic". Girl is brutally beaten & raped by 4 men. She recovers & spends the rest of the movie hunting them down, mutilating & torturing them & finally killing them in graphic & inventive ways. You can decide for yourself how "feminist" it actually is after you see it.

9pm: Irreversible [2002] -- French bad-boy auteur Gaspar Noe's tale of love, redemption & horrible, brutal violence. Most famous for driving people out of theaters in droves & causing others to faint. Audacious & ultimately soul crushing, if you think you're up to it, this is cinema that changes.

And, bring your appetites, because it's also Hot Dog Day!!! (Yes, I'm serious). We'll be providing beef & chicken dogs for y'all. If there are any Veggies in the house, please let me know & I'll make arrangements.

Also wanted to give everyone a head's up regarding this year's Xmassacre (the D.o.S.'s annual Christmas party). We've worked out the details & this year will be our first ever public film event to the hosted at the Blim Arts Society (17th & Main) on Dec 16th (Friday)!!! Admission will be by donation ($5 suggested) to cover operating costs & our feature presentation (baring any customs snafus) will be "Santa Claus", a Mexican children's movie from the early 60's that features (among other things) Santa Claus fighting Satan. Fantastical sets, bizarre Catholic overtones & a fixation on voyeurism highlight this highly entertaining piece of cinema obscura. Also, we will be doing a "Crappy Santa Gift Exchange", so bring a wrapped present of little or no value to put into the pot. More details to follow in the weeks to come (& god willing a website!), so stay tuned.

See ya soon,

~meeko

Halloween Montage

Who was this old boy? The embodiment of revenge? incest? Glad I wasn't at the other end of the electrical tape.

Note that someone is missing from the other end. Oh, the costumes...looks like the cast of passe partout.

That is one cool Skeksis mask! Also, a python lumberjack.

The raggedy host and hostess.

Tiny Tim...actually, Lil' Tim by this point.

The kid who would be superman...also this year's winner!

THE DEN OF SIN STRIKES BACK!!!

You read right folks, we're back, & we're badder than ever.

Monday, November 7: Spy Games

7PM: Modesty Blaise [1966]: Monica Vitti plays the titular (I've always wanted to say that) super spy, based on the British mod newspaper comic of the same name. With Terence Stamp and Dirk Bogarde.

9PM: Danger Diabolik [1968]: Also based on a mod comic (this time Italian), only with Mario Bava (!!!!!!) directing. Stylish, sexy & very true to the source, this is required viewing.

Monday, November 14: Val Lewton Night Part 2

7PM: The Leopard Man [1943] -- One of the lesser known Lewton horrors, this one involves a lounge singer named Kiki & a leopard on a leash who gets loose. Directed by Jacques Tourneur, who also helmed the original "Cat People" & "I Walked With a Zombie".

9PM: Ghost Ship [1943] -- Weird male power dynamics dominate this claustrophobic horror film set on a boat. Is the Captain crazy, or is there something even more sinister at work?

Monday, November 21: Rape Revenge -- BIG DISCLAIMER: Do not come if the subject of rape upsets you. I'm serious, these are not pleasant movies.

7PM: I Spit On Your Grave [1978] -- The "classic". Sleazy, misogynist exploitation, oddly considered "feminist" because most of the film is spent with the girl hunting and brutally (!) killing the men who assaulted her. However, this ignores the first 45 mins of her being humiliated and assaulted.

9PM: Irreversible [2002] -- From French "bad boy" director Gaspar Noe, this movie has been known to destroy souls. Even Sinister Sam's. Starring real life couple Monica Belucci & Vicent Cassel.

Monday, November 28: Maniac Mansion

7PM: Maniac [1980] -- One of the classics of the stalk & slash genre, this one's considered better than average (although a far cry from "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer", which we'll be screening next month) & psychologically compelling.

9PM: Oily Maniac [1976] -- Completely bizarre Shaw Brothers monster movie about a guy who transforms into a slime monster & attacks women. Extremely exploitive (yes Bob, there are boobies) with a rubber oil monster. What's not to love about this movie?!?

Also, a very special presentation this Saturday beginning at 7PM:

Visionary Man: The Films of Uwe Boll

7PM: House of the Dead

9PM: Alone in the Dark

Bring all of the booze you can safely carry & any psychotropics you feel like ingesting. I'll print off directions for the drinking game online.

Pop fund will be in effect (please let me know if you want something other than Pepsi) & RSVP please.

Christmas Exchange

I was thinking of having a Clubhouse Winter Fest on the weekend before Christmas (Saturday December 17), but would like to have a gift exchange with the stipulation that you had to have made it (scarves, videogame themed cell phone cozies, music, artwork, craft projects, etc.).  The only rule is that you had to have made it (for example, a mixed CD, while you may have compiled it, does not illustrate your creative side; a mixed CD with cover art or music made by you would qualify).  Try to be creative and unique as you have a month and a half to get the ball rolling.  I probably will not do the Greedy Santa thing, but rather a reverse, where when your name is drawn you get to give your gift to someone; if the person you want to give the gift to already has a gift they must give their gift to someone else in order to open yours.

We’re all capable of making something, and it will be a great way to showcase our talents (or lack!).

Pan-Galactic Gargleblasters

I have the recipe. It's a very, very good drink. I can by no means afford to buy all the different things needed to make it when I have to pay for a moving truck tomorrow.

If you're interested in trying them tonight, we need:

Ice
Jack Daniels
Grand Marnier
Peach Schnapps
Blue Curaco (mostly for color)
Orange juice. Lots of Orange juice.

If there's interest, I will of course bring some of the ingredients as well. Comment on what you're willing to supply.

My new contact info

Is posted on the forum.

MirrorMask

Does anyone want to see MirrorMask at Tinseltown, this Sunday at 4:35? (Or maybe 2:10 if you can't make the later showing.) By Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean of the Sandman comics, a Jim Henson Co. production in the tradition of Labyrinth and Dark Crystal. If you let me know before Saturday noon, I'll pick you up a ticket, since it's sometimes hard getting into Tinseltown-only movies on opening weekend.

Sign my cast?

This will perhaps be my last non-morphine induced transmission for the next few days. I broke my ankle on Burnaby Mountain sunday...not doing anything stupid or dangerous...just taking a corner along the base on the shoulder and having the front tire wash out while the rear knocked me to the ground. Unfortunately, my left foot got pinned...aside from the burn of a ligament tear, it didn't seem broken...but the fibula shifted and I have to get a plate put on tomorrow. Then I'll probably be confined to the coquitlam center area for about 10 days...

So yeah, I'm off to the Royal Columbian hospital for the day tomorrow.

Just remember: mountain bikes don't kill people...random forces of nature and laws of physics do.

p.s. On the flip side, Gareth did AWESOME and rode an XC that I'd spent a week working on until the gears and brakes were better than new.

Cause i'm a toys 'r us kid

I've decided that just because i've graduated it doesn't mean i have to grow up right away. So in celebration of this i'm having a kids party at Trevors on Oct. 8 anytime after 7pm. Finger food, crafts, colouring sheets(possibly a colouring contest) and loot bags (only if you rsvp because i don't have enough money to buy stuff for people i don''t know are coming) are some of the things to look forward to.

As this party is a tribute to our childhood feel free to bring any games or movies or food that symbolizes good times from when you were a child. It has been suggested to me that everyone should bring a box of their favorite sugary cereal they weren't allowed when they were younger which sounds great to me (golden grahams are my favorite).

Directions to Trevor's are in the forum but i'll update it cause right now they're kinda vague.

Frilly dresses and bunny pyjamas are perfectly acceptable attire.

On Friday after work I plan to go to Zulu to buy tickets for at least Duke and myself. I can think of a few people here who like this band, so does anyone want in? You can buy them at ticketmaster.ca already for $30 + $8 or so in service charges, but it might be significantly cheaper at Zulu.

Also I have two spare tickets for Franz Ferdinand, Row 13 at the Orpheum, Tuesday October 4th.

Temporary repatriation

I'm in Vancouver as of tomorrow for about a week. I anticipate jet lag and a substantial amount of reverse culture shock.

One thing I'm going to have to do is eat at a lot of restaurants.

Is the Mekong on Commercial still up and running? That place was rad. Some Chinese food at a decently clean Chinese restaurant might be nice (in contrast to the Chinese restaurants in China). And I need a lunch at Thai Away Home. And some Turk's coffee. Pho at midnight. Vancouver salmon sashimi. Bubble tea! (Not too popular in Japan, too dangerous in China) Etc. Anybody hungry?

Thursday, September 08, 2005

It was observed that I haven't really posted about it...

I promise if I have another personal post I'll ressurect my personal blog. For now, you get to read about my life. Or skip it.

I started work yesterday. I have my own office. It's about the size of my last boss's office. The main difference is that I'm now on the 9th floor, I have minions and a view of the ocean, mountains and downtown. A serious view. I can see both Burrard and Granville Street bridges. I have a plaque next to my door that is silver with my name in Times New Roman font. It's classy. Seeing as how I work for a firm that builds houses, the interiour of this place puts the marble and hardwood of my last job's decor to shame. I have a ginormous solid wood door on my office. My desk is huge. It's V-shaped. I have two phone numbers (one a direct line to my office, another is a direct line to my voicemail). They're pretty picky about making long distant calls, but I can certainly accept them if you want to call my at my office. I have one of those key cards that you wave like magic and you get into locked doors. It's sweet. I also have an executive chair with more gadgets than even I've managed to figure out. I can get pretty much anything I request right now. I think I want a personal desk printer. They're cheap. I wanted a better chair than the one I ended up with (or at least my desk chair, I have two other chairs meant for guests). The first chair I got slowly creapt downwards all day long until I was seated cross-legged on the floor. So today, I asked Benita (Office Manager) for a new chair. She offered me the super exec one I have now. I sat in it, said it was fine. She then said she had another chair to try out if I didn't like that one. And if I didn't like either of them, she'd order me a brand new one. (!!!) I took door number one without looking at the other options. I was featured on their intranet site. It pops up every time anyonr in the office boots up their computer. It was a "Let's all welcome the new person! Here's her brief biography!" I didn't give them a bio, and yet they had one.

Immediate perks (outside of the cushy setting) are as follows:

1. Free fluid. Not just water and coffee and tea, but there is a wide array of fruit juices that are quite delicious. I trust the bottled juices more than the coffee. Everyone there is frighteningly friendly and perky. I suspect it is a facade or something in the coffee.

2. Free food. Not only was I taken out to lunch by my supervisor (who thanks me profusely whenever I take up or complete a task)\r\nyesterday to the Cactus Club, tomorrow they are having a "New Employee Orientation Lunch" which involves me, the new employee. So they're having a lunch for me.

3. Discounts galore! 50% off bus passes. A gym for $60 a year. Some other stuff that I can't think of.

4.And I'm a hop, skip and a jump away from Granville Island. I went to the deli for lunch today.

Speaking of appearances: I've also had to nerdify myself as I got pink eye and it won't go away. I got myself some cheap new glasses, and I have no contact lenses for a while. I think I look hot, all things considered.

Uh, pictures to follow on my flickr. Such as the view and maybe some nerdy picks (when the pink eye goes away).

Booze

So out of sheer boredom I've started a batch of hobo jug wine. In 10 to 14 days, people can feel free to get righteously sick with me on whatever sewage is left in the undustrial medical soap bottle that I am brewing in. Pictures to follow.

Once finished, we will push our bum carts down to the trainyard and drink the foul brew in front of an oil-can fire, reminiscing about the good times and vomiting into our tattered coats.

R.I.P. Glen Callendar.

Karaoke Update

Tentatively, how does Saturday, the 24th of September sound for a karaoke party? Depending on the response, I might put out a request for another venue (my place could be cramped). The Slack Shack was well received last time and none of the locals were too traumatized by "Liar"...so this is good.

Updated songlist is available here.

Song count is approximately 1540 at this time. Most requests are now there.

FEMA

I'm not sure how much of this you can trust (if any) but I went to find conspiracy shit on FEMA after hearing lovely stories of repeated fuck-ups in New Orleans. 5th one down on a Google search. The link is something written up in 1995 (maybe, it says it is).

FEMA hates black people.

Sadly they don't list sources, so...

Anybody Going Down South This Weekend?

I have two tickets to Bumbershoot (this weekend) I'm trying to get rid of. Lots of good bands, art, movies & stuff.
The tickets are for one day admission (good any day) and I'm selling them at the advanced ticket price (what I paid) of $18US or $22CDN.
If you bought them there they'd be $28US ($33CDN).

We were planning on seeing DEVO, but they canceled the day after we bought the tickets. There's still lots going on, but since we couldn't really afford the trip in the first place and were only shelling out for DEVO, we'd like to sell them if we can.

Let me know.

Tough City 08/18/05

Okay, seeing as how my internet access is no longer sub-Botswana and my broken finger is healing, I'll ELABORATE.

Surfing was a blast, I joined the pacific surf school at long beach for a half day class with Aussie instructors that ran us through a 30 min beach boot camp before hitting the waves (which were moderate to high). After fighting against the waves for about an hour, I finally threw my board onto the water in-between waves, hopped on and paddled like crazy. I leapt up when the board began to lift and found myself hurtling towards shore in full stance. Saturday was even better, I offered three students from Quebec (2 pre-med, one kinesiology) a ride down to the beach for their class while I practiced with a rental that I strapped to the roof of my car. I arrived at the stage where I was able to steer along the crest. Then a loose surfboard cracked the distal phalange on my middle finger...so a swollen bird to the Pacific Ocean.

While hosteling, you inherit traveling companions almost instantly and in a place like Tofino, they all want to surf and then get hammered. After sushi at the harbor, we hit the only pub in town (KARAOKE night!) and took turns picking up rounds (there was a student from Australia, a kindergarten teacher from Ottawa and a 19 year old hostel owner from Scotland). Never take up an inherent drinking challenge from someone both younger and more Scottish than you (I'm 13%). Several nasty rounds later (coffee shots dropped in a glass of vodka and amaretto, spiced rum and ginger ale), I foolishly raise the stakes with the nastiest thing the bartender can mix, a "rocky mountain bearfucker". Despite the poor reception of my last round, I remain present to ensure that everyone in my party makes it back to the hostel and doesn't get picked up by anyone sleazy. Stumbling through the dark basement, I use the mirror at the end of the hall to determine how close I am to the doorknob of my room. When I think I've hit my door, I open it and walk in, pausing to maintain my balance. "WHOA!" "Whoa?" I answer. "WHOA!" "Whoa?" I answer. "WHOA" we say in concert. I happened to be next door to the Hostel owner, a 26yo surfer whose girlfriend decided to sleep over that night. Fortunately he laughed it off the next day (amidst several rocky mountain hangovers) and seemed to have a good sense of what I was all about...I did hang out with him and his friend, the resident hip hop expert, the next night...Moka Only plays Tofino on the 23rd.

Friday I kayaked around Clayoquot Sound and hiked Meares Island. I'll flickr those pictures along with Lil' Qualicum Falls and Qualicum Beach.

Duke (from Nanaimo)
p.s. I?ve gotta host an all-serbian buffet with the amazing dishes I?m learning to make over the next few days.

Last of the summer Den of Sin!

What the fuck?! I'm hearing a whole lot of you are horrifically without any Russ Meyer in your life. Not even the essentials. Well we'll fix that. Oh yeah we will. So for tomorrow we have two for ya.

MON. Aug.22/05

7pm (sharp) Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1979):
The classic and Meyer's best movie. The Cramps have sampled this movie repeatedly. DO IT!

9pm: Up! (1979): This one has boobies. BIG BOOBIES!

Also thank you all who showed up at the fundraiser. We got some good shots. Many thanks for the cash.

Zombie Walk Vancouver 2005
ZOMBIEWALK 2005!!!
Usually held in Toronto, this shambling, stumbling, flailing good time will be held in Vancouver this year! Yay us! So if you have a mild obsession with Zombies (as many of my friends do), or you simply love to get rotten and yell "Braaaaiiins" at random people, then mark this one on your calendar:

Saturday, August 27 - starts 4pm from the VAG and 5pm from 15th and Sophia (near Main St).

(a WEEK away, so you have plenty of time to plan to be there!) The walk will start in two-stages as follows:

1. All non-lazy zombies (or "super zombies") are invited to gather on or around the big steps at the Vancouver Art Gallery no later than 4pm. From the VAG the horde will be skytrain bound. After a stumble through the mall and a short jaunt on Vancouver's fine public transit system we will de-train at Main St. station and stumble on up to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church - 320 East 15th - two blocks east of Main. Once there, we will take a short pause to collect ourselves, gnaw on brains, and meet up with . . .

2. The lazy zombies. A second group of zombies will gather in front of the above mentioned church (Bethlehem Lutheran, 320 East 15th, at Sophia and E 15th) at or around 5pm. Remember - zombies tend to move slowly and occasionally have problems with limbs falling off, body stiffness and possibly skytrain security officers. If you do not see any of your brethren exactly at 5pm, be patient. Mill about and look scary.

Once all zombie factions have massed at the church it will be time to head onward and uphill to Mountainview Cemetery at Fraser and 31st. For reference, the walk will proceed along Main Street to 31st should any zombie stragglers be left behind and/or spontaneous zombies wish to join the braaiiins procession.

Once at the cemetery, please be on good zombie behaviour - respect your brethren.
We will linger a short while in the cemetery before moving onwards to nearby
Queen Elizabeth Park for some games, brains, fun, prizes, brains and a pinata or two.

Yes, you do have to dress like a zombie. Those who do not do so are welcome, but risk having their brains eaten by confused zombies. You have to admit - they're not all that smart, but they know a good living brain when they smell it.

Potentially useful things to keep in mind:

Causes of zombie-ness:

As everyone knows - or should know - zombies are usually attributable to one or more of the following:

1. voodoo
2. science gone astray - chemical or biological accidents, experiments, viruses and the like
3. the apocalypse

Of course, there are many more possibilties. Be creative. Corpses in all stages of decay are encouraged.

For the low-budget zombie:

1. Oatmeal and liquid latex works wonders.
2. Food colouring and corn syrup makes convincing blood, but sticky. However, also tasty.
3. Value Village - but I'm sure it's hardly necessary to mention that.

Finally: As mentioned previously - zombies are only really effective when travelling together in large groups. Bring your friends, foes, family and other loved ones.

Nothing says you love someone quite like caking yourself in make-up, limping down the street together and eating them in the park!

Pass this info on to anyone who might be interested - it has a bit of a 'viral' feel to it, but see zombie cause number 2. It all makes perfect sense.

Oh shit I forgot...

I need people to cover the door tomorrow to collect cash. So whoever wants to help out there's a way. Also the more people who volunteer the less time you have to stand at the door. So everyone volunteer.

Once more unto the breach...

Getting back into the blogging game... much customization to be done in the coming days.

As always, consistent comments will be rewarded with smuggled wildlife.

So yeah making another movie. Hoping to start shooting Aug 28th. Guess what? I'll probably need your help. I know for sure I'm gonna need an AD (Assistant Director AKA: AD, First Assistant Director, 1st Assistant Director
An assistant director's duties include tracking the progress of filming versus the production schedule, and preparing call sheets.), some PAs and catering (I was thinking maybe people could volunteer for certain days to feed the cast and crew because you LOVE us! That'd be awesome. Ummm I'll put up a list for what I need in the next few days but yeah if you want to read the script e-mail me (beezlebozoclown@yahoo.com) and I'll send it. But yeah come everyone and feed me drugs and money (money more important)

Oh shit almost forgot. In dire need of a certain location. An OFFICE WITH MANY CUBICLES. One that has work stations for half a dozen or more people. Clean. Someone suggested SFU but can we? So if anyone have Dad's with offices or own businesses themselves and want to help out please tell me!

That's all for now. I think.

Departures...

Doing a brief, low-profile thingy at the Trap'n'Gill, Seymour @ Davie, at around 7 tonight. Not planning on drinking, so shouldn't be too nuts, but anybody who wants to give me one final noogie can join us there.

Cascade Falls

*The following is a promotion for time-share property in Cascade Falls.

Actually, I wanted to prove this legendary place existed. East along Highway #7, just east of Mission (and Stave Lake), you turn left on Sylvester Road, drive north 14km, turn right on Ridgeview and park at the gate. Then climb through the wood 10min to the riverbed, scale that for 20min to the giant pool. You're welcome.

Here's a shot of the lower falls just past the gate:

Once you've scaled the river bed (jumping from rock to rock, shimmying ledges, wading through pools) you come to the big pool and naturally formed waterslide:

Sqweek takes the plunge:

Duke prepares to meet his maker:

Several pools and waterfalls above the slide, there is another big waterfall, behind which there is a cave with a 6 foot deep pool in the center. To get here, you should have some rock climbing experience...

Due to the fact that total water immersion is required at a few points, I couldn't take the digital camera as far as the cave. Instead, I submit this artist's rendition:

On the way back, we observed some mountain bikers doing the bunny-hop from rock to rock. Obviously the bunny is no match for the fox and his mighty forward flip.

So...first hot weekend in September...clubhouse caravan? It's an hour drive from Burnaby, but very worth it.

CLASS OF '05

Congrats to all our graduates! For all those with lame substitute clipart instead of a photo in the yearbook, here are some highlights.

I guess you could call these the valedictorians...I accompanied them to the far reaches of the GVRD to find mere tablescraps of what only chinese emperors were allowed to consume over 2000 years ago. We waited over four hours for the only traditional source this side of Hong Kong.

"This tastes like cotton batten rolled in icing sugar...I can't get it off the roof of my mouth!"

It seems like it should spin with the push of a button...

I think that's Bob in mid-swig.

ONCE AGAIN CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR GRADUATES!!

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

My drama class was planning a trip to see R&G at Bard on The Beach but the date we picked was sold out. As several people have expressed interest in going I thought I would try to organize another outing. If we can get 15 people together we can get a 3 dollar discount. Normal ticket price for evenings is $28 and 3pm saturdays are $24.50.

Possible dates: wed. aug 17(8pm), sun aug 21(7pm), sat aug 27(3pm), wed aug 31(8pm)
these are the days and times in which we could try for a discount,

if you are interested in going leave a post in the comments letting me which days work best for you. I'll post again when i figure out what day will work best and whether or not we can get tickets for it. I'd like to try and organize it pretty quick so if you want to come make sure you let me know sometime this week.

Nerdiness

Does anybody have a Risk board I can borrow briefly? I used to have one, but like so much else I never found it again after returning from Africa.
