My Birthday

As an excuse to get free drinks, I will be going out on Saturday for drinks. All friends of mine are welcome to join me. Location and Time TBA, but I'm thinking we could really take over the Vet's hall. I know some people might be uncomfortable there, but drinks are cheap, and it's waaaay quieter on Saturdays.

Suggestions or concerns can be emailed to me or posted in the comments.

Movie night cancelled... NO MORE!

Remember how awesome Underworld was? No? Good, 'cuz we're watching it again at the Clubhouse this coming Monday, January 30th.

Why? Because afterward, we're going to go out and watch Underworld 2.

Why watch both? Because Underworld 2 is destined to be so bad, that we need time to get drunk beforehand. Underworld should provide ample time and motivation to get drunk enough to ruin the movie for all the normal moviegoers out there, who are foolish enough to go and see Underworld 2 wherever we end up.

Of course, planning this event caused me to be so indebted to Meeko that I promised to go and see Bloodrayne with her when it finall comes out, so if you can't make this one, you can always come to see Uwe Boll's latest videogame-inspired masterpiece with her and I (I have no false hopes that anyone besides she and I attending, so don't feel bad).

Corinne will post the meeting thime in the comments of this posting. Hope to see you there, until I get blind drunk that is (on a school night no less!).

Housewarming Reminder

Just wanted to remind everyone of the housewarming tonight, anytime after 7pm. Food, games, bit 'o karaoke and a tour o' the new place.

Two things:
- skytrain to joyce or park alongside the london drugs mall off kingsway...parking is an issue.
- Use the "#" and "*" keys at the front door to find "Mike" and that will dial my cell.

Address and phone are in the forum.

Thanks!

High School Massacre

7pm: Zero Day (2003): If you only make it to one movie this week, make it to this one. Easily one of the most underrated films of 2003, Zero Day is a master work in making one's budget work for the movie and providing an emotionally devastating portrait of how things can go terribly, terribly wrong. Fuck Gus Van Sant, this is the honest exploration of highschool tragedy.

9pm: Duck! The Carbine School Massacre (2000): Mere months after the events at Columbine High School, a couple of guys named Hellfire & Smack (oh yeah) decided to make a splatter tribute on High8 video. Tasteless, grisly fun or cinematic abomination? You be the judge.

Pop fund & RSVP (although you never do).

Luv,

~meeko

For Mariko

This is amazing. Sond kinda sucks, and the video is a bit fuzzy. But this is a clip from an 1983 James Brown concert. He calls up Michael Jackon from the audience, and MJ does a litlle bit of his thang. MJ then tells JB that Prince is in the audience, and he's called up.......holy fuck this is awesome. Prince takes over!

Excuse: a random birthday
Date: 28th Jan.
Place: Slack Shack
Mission: introduce Maria's french friend Susanne and her french BF to massive numbers of people that don't speak their language and all get smashed off our asses...
Moral: meeting new Quebecois people and getting them drunk is a good way to learn naughty words for use abroad

Underrated Horror Sequel Night

Or so Rue Morgue would have me believe in a top 100 overlooked movies list.

7pm Amityville Horror II: The Possession (1982): What Rue Morgue said, " Sorely overlooked upon release as yet another case of sequelitis, "The Possession" actually ages a lot better than the original "Amityville Horror" with its story of domestic tragedy and ghostly first-person camera work". Well let's hope so. I certainly don't want to regret not taking Sinister Sam's suggestion that we'd be better off with Amityville Horror 3-D, sans the 3-D of course.

9pm Exorcist III (1990): I remember seeing this when I was 10 and having the shit spooked out of me. William Peter Blatty (who wrote the original Exorcist novel) adapted his other demon possession novel "Legion". It was then decided to add an exorcism scene at the end and voila! You have an Exorcist sequel. Either way let's hope my 10 year old self had some taste or we're traveling back in time to kick his (my?) ass and maybe hopping a bit forward to get it on with younger versions of our significant others or ex-significant others.

Jan. 16
Nazis and the Babes Who Love Them

7pm Night Porter (1974): I really like this IMDB user comment, "Walking a fine line between compelling drama and utter sleaze, THE NIGHT PORTER is one of those films you're going to react to strongly. Dirk Bogarde gives one of his creepiest performances as the title character, a post-war Nazi-in-hiding who stumbles across a camp survivor he had an uber-yucky ongoing tryst with. Charlotte Rampling is pretty good as his paramour, but it's the supporting cast of Nazis in denial that make this Italian film a sleazoid classic. It also kicked inspired one of the most brazen and despised subgenres of Italian filmmaking, the Nazi sexploitation film. Whatever you think of it, THE NIGHT PORTER is certainly far more tasteful than anything that followed it!" Hey maybe we watch some of those sleazy Italian movies...hey wait look at this.

9pm Salon Kitty (1976): This will be our first Tinto Brass movie we've seen (We suck, we know but we're cute!). This about a brothel enjoyed by many a Nazi. There may be a plot involving recording the Nazis getting it on (meaning "bizarre passions and carnal degradations") with the ladies for blackmail purposes. But hey there's "Bizarre passions and carnal degradations". Sadly we don't know about programming more Tinto Brass movie for fear of tripping over people's boners while heading to the washroom.

Jan. 23
High School Massacre

7pm Zero Day (2003): Like Gus Van Sant's "Elephant" a movie that tries to understand what might lead two boys to march into their school and blow away a few of their classmates. Unlike the Columbine Killers the two boys here are presented as normal well-adjusted teens with loving families. Filmed as a video journal as the teens plan their massacre and explain their motives. The families of these boys were played by their real families adding an authenticity to the film. You might want to read this article by the filmmaker after a fan of the film got...inspired.

9pm Duck! The Carbine School Massacre (2000): The first post-Columbine exploitation movie shot on cheap ass Hi-8 video! Watch our heroes Hellfire and Smack lay down their fury on their classmates! Righteous fury!

Jan. 30
Early Miike

7pm Shinjuku Triad society (1995): Miike's theatrical debut after many straight to video features. There's yakuza violence and taboos broken. Fun to be had by all.

9pm Fudoh: The New Generation (1996): Fudoh doesn't like his yakuza boss Dad, especially after seeing him kill Fudoh's brother. So it's all out war between Father and Son! It's Miike that should be enough explanation for you.

That's almost it for this month. Stay tuned.

For those interested...

I don't post often to my blog, so I thought I'd let people know I've posted my top 50 albums of 2005.

NO MOVIE NIGHT TONIGHT

Thanks to everyone who showed up to the New Year's raclette party. It was very fun.

Unfortunately I have a crap-tonne of work to get done by Wednesday, which means no movie night.

Sorry. We will post an updated schedule for January later this week.
